Question What type of material is this?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm trying to sell a bag for my mom, but I don't know what type of material it is made of... It's not leather, it's a little furry, and I've seen this type of material on jackets and overcoats sometimes. The material is heavy. Any idea what it is?

In one photo it looks like felt (which is most likely is not) and the other photo looks like leather.

Can't tell by the pictures, but your description sounds like it could be suede. Typically suede is leather with a nappy finish.

It might be this, from Prada's website:

"Satchel in nylon (Prada's signature material) with nappa trim. Black palladium-plated hardware
Interior: pocket with zipper and pocket with button"

Is that description for a specific item? If so, can you send me a link?

Yeah, well,..........it doesn't match your shoes!

Have you tried searching the manufactures name on the bag?

I couldn't find it on Prada's website, so it's probably a discontinued product.

Moleskin?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moleskin

They make coats out of it, which is what made me think that it could be after you said you've seen it on them.

Does moleskin's color change when you brush it to the left than when you brush it to the right?

Then it's not moleskin... I don't think Prada would make anything out of moleskin either. Their bag material is probably from skin of animals on the near-extinction list.

It's not the exact bag from your photos, but I looked at similar bags and that seems to be one of their materials.

That just takes me to their online store's home page. Which bag are you talking about?

Look through all the bags, there are several that look like they're made of the same material.

According to the Prada site, it is one of three materials: "Nappa leather", which is a very soft unsplit full-grain leather; "Patent Naplak" which is a modern type of shiny patent leather with a plastic coating; or "nylon, Prada's famous material" which means either they think calling ordinary nylon "Prada's famous material" makes it fancier than plain old tent nylon, or they have their own special nylon recipe.

If the material at hand is not shiny and slightly brittle-looking, then it is not Naplak. If the material is not soft and supple, then it is not Nappa. If the material is neither of those, then it is almost certainly "nylon, Prada's famous material".

The one other option not listed on their site is ultrasuede, a synthetic suede used often in hats, coats, and handbags. It kind of looks like ultrasuede to me in your pics, but again they do not mention ultrasuede on the Prada site.
