Also if you look closely when Scotty is playing the bagpipes you can spot his missing finger he lost in WWII.
Edit: The part when you see Spock in the stars and Leonard Nimoy's narration gave the viewer optimism that he still lives on. A nice touch.

Then they waved a magic wand and brought him back to life in the next movie and I was like:

For a few minutes, at least. Then by the end of the film it seemed pretty clear he was somehow going to return in the next one.
