There's a wildfire a few miles from here. Heading the other way, so we're most likely going to be fine. But good friends are having to evacuate, and it makes me think.
What would YOU take if you had 30 minutes to evacuate?
For context, put your age, family status, and vehicle - I know that what I'd take if I were 20 and single, or had a big SUV, would be very different that what I'd take now, because I'm 48 and have a family and limited space in the car..
So - I'm 48 and drive a Prius.
My wife has a Ford Escape. So if she's home, there's more room for stuff.
For me, first it's my wife and son.
Second is the 3 dogs, and food for them.
The cats, if I can find them (they're indoor/outdoor cats).
2 of my basses have priority - my Zon fretless and my Tobias (MBM - Made by Mike) fretted. My other basses would get packed on an "if there's room and time" basis.
One of my doumbek drums, given to my by my Syrian teacher.
Photo albums - especially my wedding and my son's birth.
All of the computers (2 laptops and a desktop - just the main box, not the monitors etc).
A few days worth of clothing for all of us.
And not least, an incredible custom knife that was a gift from my son.
From there we get to the "if I can manage it".
My NeoPak would probably come along, since it's little and light.
Similarly, if I have room the other basses (especially the Gary Willis).
If I give it more thought there are probably a few books that would be a bitch to replace. But I think that's pretty well covers the "not much room, gotta get out now!" scenario.

My mode of transportation is my feet and the bus ahhaa
So what I would take:
-My backpack
-wallet
-any change i could find
-My stuffed sheep i got from my girlfriend.
-my harmonicas
-my glasses
-Gameboy with pokemon gold
-my acoustic guitar ( easier to play where ever you are )
- shoes
- some underwear ( i can deal with wearing the same clothes )
- My corner gas hat ( extreme attachment to this hat )
- my toque
all this fits in my backpack , and is reasonably lightweight.
with exception of the acoustic, but thats not that heavy.
all of this could fit on the bus too.
edit - I've been contimplating doing this actually. Not that i dont like my life at home. i dont have any problems with my family, i like living here. i just think it'd be kind of fun for a little while. I dont think my parents would approve, theyd probably take it as running away or sumthing.
i know how it may not be as *real* as the real thing. (being homeless) because id have a place to come back to.

Ya know, as long as I got the wife, and I really would like to take the dog if possible, the rest of that crap is only valued in dollars. The stuff that lives and breathes is the only stuff that's really important.

I just don't have many material possessions that I'd be heartbroken to lose. Assuming my girlfriend made it out safely (or wasn't over to begin with) then I suppose I'd try to save my basses, fretless Stambaugh first.
Maybe a couple photo albums
Everything else is just stuff that could be replaced. |

Then anything else I could grab. It's amazing how much of our lives are now stored on our hard drives.

34, married, 2 kids, 1 dog, Subaru Forester
2 small suitcases with 2 or 3 changes of comfortable clothes for everyone involved.
1 large suitcase with all of our physical photographs (hanging pictures included) and our wedding video.
Any necessary medication.
Your cell.
The computer.
I keep our important paperwork (insurance, tax info, etc) in a backpack during hurricane season.
Your neighbor's phone number.
Cash.
Portable radio that doesn't require batteries and other emergency junk (first aid kit, flashlight, etc).
Snacks/drinks for the ride.
MRE's for a few days.
5-10 gallons of gas strapped to the roof of your vehicle.
Any tools you might need to re-enter your home (hammer or crowbar, gloves).
Duct tape (you never know)
Pocket knife.
6 or 12 pack.
Mike
EDIT: the toilet paper is a good one. I realize that this list might be hard to asemble in 30 minutes. The reason we separate our paperwork into a backpack is because we got caught the first time trying to locate everything and missed some very important stuff.

In order of importance:
fiance
dog
cats
emergency supplies
any valuable papers
computer
any one bass
any one valuable thing belonging to the fiance
We'd take the RAV4 of course. I'd be happy to let the Prelude burn and get some insurance money for it. I hate that thing. |

My nail clippers and a package of yellow balloons.
Some people here have mentioned something for entertainment, which I gave no thought to whatsoever. I don't have an iPod or anything like it, so I'll bring some waxed paper and an old comb. Maybe a pair of spoons if somebody would like to sit in with me.
