And ya, the fiction. I've perseverated on Mann, Broch, Musil, Conrad, Perec, Borges, and Cortazar for the past decade. I gotta break out of this. But everything else I crack open seems adolescent. Unless I turn further back -Clemens, Dickens, Hoffmann - righteous shite my friend. And OK, Salinger - not my schtick, but I can dig why it would be for somebody else. And if you're into the latter, what's your take on Roth (Henry, not Phillip)?

I just reread that a few months ago along with "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer". Both excellent stories and witty.

I've been reading down a shortened version of The BBC Big Read - parred down from the 200 book list to 100 fiction books. Always been more of a non-fiction reader and thought I'd try some of the classic fiction. I'm about half way down the list. Not strictly sticking to the list - substituting some titles from what I already read as a kid in school - also if authors have more than one book on the list.

https://apps.facebook.com/booklistchallenge/List/?l=1

Has been fun! Still reading some non-fiction now and then. I like Music (duh!), Geology, Astronomy, Bios, some paranormal stuff.

This thread is just a mundane thread for readers. If you read through some pages of this thread people do go into discussions over books. I don't review books because I post as I pick up a new book -- perhaps should post when I finish instead. i don't post covers 'cuz it takes to long to mess with - UNLESS it's a super good music book/bio - then I will for added interest for others.

ps > about the 100 Big Read = there's more than 100 books because the list contains trilogies as well; ie His Dark Materials, Lord of the Rings.

About two-thirds of the way through Jennifer Government by Max Berry - dystopian future of corporations ruling the world.

Since the 27th I have read 1984, animal farm and I'm currently halfway through Brave New World. I'll probably attack We, fahrenheit 451 or lord of flies next.

About halfway through:

Check The Technique: Liner Notes for Hip Hop Junkies by Brian Coleman.

I am a total liner note nerd to begin with and the book interviews MC's, DJ's, producers, record execs, and others who helped to contribute to some of hip hop's greatest releases in the 80's and 90's. If you love hip hop or you loved hip hop from that period it's a fascinating read.

Fahrenheit 451 would be my vote.
Rather unimpressed with Brave New World after all the hype, but loved 1984, Animal Farm, and Lord of the Flies.

Never read We.

Just finished "Meade of Gettysburg", a great run through the history of this often overlooked Civil Was general.

Brave New World is good, but you have to appreciate the numerous external references. Nearly every name point toward two individuals that existed, the numerous lines taken out of shakespear's work, etc.

It's a different approach to a "uniformed" world, less inspired by Bolshevism and more by technology, which makes it... scarier in some ways.

This image, even with its shortcomings, is pretty good.

Why the hatred toward We?

There's also The Giver that was pretty good, I remember reading that in 10th grade.

I feel that I have let myself down by not tuning in to Hitch's work before he died.

My bad, "Never read We" sounded like an imperative.
