While I'm not in the field anymore, I enjoyed my time there and it led directly to the job I'm in now--which I find to be better, better-paying and more stable. I feel for my former colleagues still trying to slug it out in the industry. Quote:

High schoolers pay attention. Anyway, law school is an option, or a masters in public policy or something like that. In any event, more schooling is in order.

Todd Barry does an awesome geologist bit in his stand up. He starts by saying that the "reservoir tip" on a condom is a grandiose term for a tiny bubble of material, sarcastically stating "Ooh, we need a reservoir. We don't want to contaminate the groundwater!"
When the audience laughs, he says "Oh, looks like we have some geologists in the audience!" Kills me every time!

What really matters is that you you have the Bachelor's degree, because that's a Yes/No for hiring eligibility in many companies. After that, your personality and interview skills will get you a very long way. You need to get TO the interview - and then you better knock 'em over in the interview.
Take heart - you can enter many Master's programs without having a Bachelor's in the same field. And unless you either have prospects for a job, or a set of skills unrelated to History (for instance, you may be a great salesman), I'd plan on getting a Master's in Business Admin or some other immediately employable field.

Since you are in MD, look into History Associates, they do archiving projects and other things as well. Between research, educational outreach, museums, and archive facilites in the area, there is quite a bit you can do. |

I went in to Urban Planning - mostly on the affordable housing side of things, so the Geography came in handy.
