I haven't posted in OT for a little while, but I really want to get a sampling of public opinions about gasoline.
What brand do you use, and why?
To be honest, for many years I drove cars everyday, yet I didn't know or care about gas. I heard other guys talk about "bad" gas stations and "bad" gas, and I thought it was just some sort of weird name brand loyalty type of thing - another thing for grumpy old men to grumble about.
Then I got more interested in my cars and how they run. I got a car with a great running V8 engine and really paid close attention to how it ran - first on a tank of cheap gas. I read the owners manual which described how the car would perform on low quality gasoline. I realized it was describing something I was noticing - Just a tiny bit of a hint of hesitation when taking off from stops. I ran all the gas out of it and filled it up with better gas. That little bit of hesitation - it was completely gone.
Now that I've felt the difference in performance, I've "seen the light" and have started to care about what goes in the tank. I used to go to 7-eleven all the time. I will never buy that gas again (Dad was right about that…) I've been using 76 gas lately and have no complaints about performance, and they claim it has a good detergent, so for now, I'm sticking with it.
And what about the detergent? How do you know what's working? I guess I just have to assume that quality performing gasoline will contain a quality detergent and keep my injectors clean. If any mechanics know what brands really keep the engine clean inside, I'd love to hear about that.
I want to know what other guys who know about cars put in the tank. What brand of gas is good, and why? What brand should be avoided at all costs? Maybe post your location along with your experiences, as types of octane boosters and detergents may vary by region.
I live in the Pacific Northwest, I say 76 gas is good and 7-eleven gas is very bad. What are your experiences with different brands of gas? |
