What are your thoughts on the word "Unnatural" ? In my assessment it is not used properly in the intended context many apply it to.

I think we should pride ourselves on being able to rise above a lot of our inherent tendencies and use our mental faculties to consciously guide our behaviour as we see fit. |

We commonly use natural to refer to the state without/prior to human contamination. This seems to suggest that our actions are unnatural, and maybe that we are. I don't like to separate humans from "what is natural", but that leaves everything open.
consider medical ethics. If our actions, and to a degree us, are not natural, then we shouldn't worry about things being unhealthy or wrong because they are unnatural. If we are natural, then those alterations we make are also a natural process of the human mind/science.
Natural can also be used as a conservative term; in that what we consider natural is relative to what we are used to. If you buy that, then everything you didn't grow up with is unnatural.
Aristotle said natural states were those at rest, so change is unnatural, or going away from the natural state.
This is a really interesting question that ive never really made up my mind where i stand on. |
