Whats the best iPod to get?

Sign in to disble this ad
My mom wants to get me one for xmas. The only thing Ill probably do with it, is listen to music.

I own a TON of music, probably 1500+ CDs if not more. Im thinking the 160GB one is the only way to go; The iPod classic that is. Anything less than that, then I wouldnt be able to put everything I own on it, plus stuff I would want in the fufture.

I know next to nothing about iPods, so any advise would be useful. Thanks!

Classic, no question. Even if you didnt have much music, Id say classic. Great straight forward media player, and its a deal that CRUSHES the iPod nano. (It does the EXACT same thing, with 10x the memory, for only $50 more. What else could you want?)

I have a 160 as well. The only problem is that it takes forever to scroll through all the music.

I have a 4Gb (first-gen) nano, and I do fine, but I tend to focus my listening to a few albums at a time, and I think having 160 gigs isnt really that handy, it takes forever to scroll through and since most people probably play a small percentage of the music it just isn't worth it

BUT if you do listen to ALL your music or won't see a computer to switch out your music for an extended time, go with the classic

I will say that random by song is a mofo though...never know what you're going to hear.

Also, I've set up a bunch of smart play lists that make some of the genre random stuff easier to do.

ya I would just set it on random all the time. Go from Bob Dylan to Om to Grand Funk Railroad to Neurosis to Megadeth to Elton John to Down and back

I wear out mp3 players and Ipods.

I own a 160.. it's enough to plug tons of material into. I really only use it when on airplanes... I have over 8000 songs on it and a bucket filled of Adam Carolla radio & podcasts.

Funny thing I use 2 gig USB Stick stuff more (easier to load, no itunes issues, faster load).. brands are Coby, Phillips etc... I find them in the $20 range all the time.

I owned smaller Ipods.. they were kind of a joke if you have an extensive music collection.. the deal with them is you can load on gobs and gobs of material.

I doubt I would download ANYTHING on iTunes. All the music I own, I have a hard copy of, whether it be CD, tape, or record. Part of the reason Ive never owned an iPod is because I kind of feel like Id be selling out if I got one. Im a bit of an audiophile and Im just worried about getting a $250 gift and not using it because the tunes sound compressed, fizzy and sterile.

I have a 4 year old, 20GB Classic & carrying my music library with me was awesome. I don't have 1500 CDs. It took 40 hours to import the 400-500 disks I have. It would have played for 13+ days, non-stop & I got to listen for 5 or 6 hours a day, while I worked. Terrific!

Start building your iTunes library now, if you haven't already. Once it is all digitized, give some thought to how you will mirror it so you don't have to import it again if/when something goes wrong. A 2nd HDD, internal or external will be real useful.

I bought AppleCare for the iPod & used it 4 times in the 1st year. Your results may vary. I bought a gel cover for the iPod. Occasionally I lose my grip & it falls. The cover has been good protection when I get clumsy. (the same for my cellphone)

I recently re-created my iPod with only 9GB of music on board. I really don't need to be able to hear everything on demand. I often set it to shuffle & hit the fast forward if a tune doesn't appeal to me. (Thanks to Gary Willis for the tip!) The iPod is 1 of my favorite toys!

I like Podcasts. If you don't know it, you might like some of the stuff posted on IndieFeed.com

Good luck

Think about how you want to use it. I regularly add and remove music on my iPod. You can simply drag an artist or album's name on the iPod's icon and all of its songs will transfer. I keep a "for the iPod" playlist that it is set to synchronize to. My amount of music tends to stay around 4 gigs this way, but if it's more of your kind to keep everything with you, go for a Classic.

Classic is the only way to go. I've got a Nano just for running... going to pick up a Classic for my hour commute soon.

Not sure about the new ones, but the full size work(ed) on a standard hard drive which was prone to crashing as they aged, while the Nano lines use flash memory. Not sure if that's still the case for the bigger ones though. Failures are hard to predict as well. I have a friend who had an original pre-wheel ipod and his lasted for years, I think I had my nano before his died. I have another friend who had a classic (120 gb I think?) which he bought as a refurb. Hard drive failed 6 months later.

I had a 1st gen 4gb nano, the battery died about 2.5 years after I got it. I sent it back and got a new one for $50 through the battery replacement program. I never wanted to get anything else because I like the convenience of just being able to toss it in my pocket and not have to carry a big bulky thing around.

I ended up giving the nano to my sister earlier this year when I got my touch free with my wife's macbook (she has a newer nano so I lucked out). I sprung for the bigger touch when I got it, just because I had more music than the free one could hold. It's been great. I never thought I'd use it for anything but music but it's come in handy when I'm bored in random places. Plus I can usually steal a wifi signal when in populated areas.

If you're just looking for music, I'd definitely say just get the 160 gb. Can't go wrong. And you'll be surprised how much itunes grows on you. I've gotten lazy and/or impatient lately and I've just been buying tunes online instead of waiting to go buy them in a store. Plus some of my favorite bands have been doing pre-releases on itunes lately, so I almost had to . I like having something physical when I buy an album, so I've been buying more vinyl, especially when it comes with adigital download. A few albums I've gotten lately I've actually paid for both vinyl and digital just so I can have both.

Classic 160 G is what I'll be updating to so I can have all my tunes and UVTV video podcasts together!

No regrets, getting my "Classic" 80, couple years ago. Never have to deliberate over what to put in it - it's all there, all the time - music AND photos. Crazy.

I agree with everyone here. I have an 8gb nano, and I love it for it's size. But I got my wife the Classic, and if you don't mind the bulk, it's got enough memory for all of your music and probably most of your movies. Awesome!!!
