I've been looking to go to one soon, but havn't been in a while. With the economy the way it is what prices are they offering for musical equipment? I'm talking in general terms of course.

| | | | Most pawn shops I've been to lately have like 200$ on beat up squires and soundgears.
Not many deals by a long shot.

The guy that does the basses and guitar stuff at one of them works for guitar center. Anything good they get, he buy at cost (I suspect) and sells it to GC for a profit. They only keep the worst of the stuff at the pawn shop and charge really close to retail.

Most of the pawn shop stuff seems to be junk designed and built to market to suckers in stinky ol' pawn shops - where DO they get all that junk?

These days? No such luck.
+1 on eBay, Craigslist etc.

The TB classifieds are another story

Partially, The Pawn Shop started dying when large pawn shop chains (like Cash America) started moving in. Killing the local pawn shop.
Most of the chains set their prices and won't haggle much, if at all.
There's only one local pawn shop left in my town.
And even in a town like Las Vegas Rick Harrison's pawn shop (from "Pawn Stars") is the only family owned pawn shop there.
(proof reading back, this response looks like an excuse just to type "pawn shop" as many times as possible. It wasn't my intent. pawn shop, pawn shop, pawn shop) |

I occasionally see a deal but very rarely on an instrument. Deals on instruments are gone the next day when I've done my research and decided that it really is a good price. Other stuff - like rack tuners, wireless, and stomp boxes - do come up for decent prices (I bought two of the three). If I think I can use it and the price is below the going rate in the TB classified's I'll go for it.
When haggling it is good to know the going rate for what ever you are bargaining for. One Pawn America I shop will pull up a search for the item and show you what similar items have been selling for on the 'bay and such to show you how great a deal they are offering.
Good hunting,

Which I realize has always been the M.O. of the pawn shop but now both ends have been taken to their extremes. |

Over here most pawn shops seem to be of the chain variety (such as Cash Converters) which are genuine out-and-out ripoffs for the most part, or at least charge the most part of a retail price, or dodgy backstreet places.
