What's the point of Alaska?

Sign in to disble this ad
I was browsing a map today zoomed in fairly tight, it was of the Victoria, BC area in Canada. As I moved around on the map, I got way up north and found the border of the USA and Canada. I zoomed out and realized I was at Alaska.

What is the point of the USA having Alaska way up there? Why can't the USA trade all of that land in and get some Canadian land so the line across the top of the USA is straight? Like where Minnesota is and the line gets jagged, just carry it on straight east all the way out to St. Johns.

Alaska has more strategic value. Also likely more financial value considering the fisheries and the oil reserves.

Yeah, but then the USA could get the Grand Banks, and those are no joke in October.

It was all part of Seward's (Secretary of State at the time) vision to control the Pacific Ring. He tried to buy British Columbia and instead got Alaska for a steal. People thought it was a dumb idea back then as well.

Like was said above though, definitely a big strategic value.

I wave to Mother Russia every time I visit. My friends wave back, I feel all warm and make s'mores.

The only point of Alaska is so the Discovery and History Channels would have something to make TV shows about.

Which is better than the un-reality dating shows that every other network seems to be hung up on.

Because it's detached from the lower 48 and it's so cold, it's sparsely populated and makes a good place for criminals to hide out. Like Mike's friends who beat the hell out of people.
