What's the technical term for this piece of networking technology

Well, I'm wondering more if such a thing exists. Is there a router type thing that can actually receive a wireless signal, then be able to disribute that to multiple locations via ethernet cable?

My place has wireless and I have both a computer and a xbox that I want to hook up, but the darn wireless adapter for the xbox is a hundred bucks. So if there was something like this I could pick up instead it could save me some cash.

Thanks

look on the back of your wireless router. most likely there is another ethernet cable hub connection that you can connect to.

my wireless router at home is a linksys and has a 4 hub ethernet connection on the back.

Surely a router will take a cable signal input and broadcast it wirelessly as output, rather than the other way round?

It sounds like what the OP's after is some sort of combination of a wireless card (to pick up the signal) and then a network hub to share it around, which is a bit weird because most home wireless networks would work with a signal coming in from the net through some sort of cable and then distributed around the house wirelessly - the opposite of what's being asked for here.

I'm assuming you're in some sort of accommodation where wireless networking is provided for you by the administration, yes? If you're picking up wireless with your computer you already have the wireless card bit I mentioned. You may be able to link your computer to your xbox with something like laplink software and an ethernet cable - not sure though.

i think what you want is a wireless bridge

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge

http://reviews.cnet.com/wireless-acc...-30460920.html

some wireless access points/routers can be used as bridges. they have a "bridge mode" the wireless portion connects to the master access point then you can use the ethernet cable to connect another router or other devices as needed.

realize that this may not provide the best throughput. but they should get you connected.

but for the price you would pay for the bridge and other parts - you might as well buy the card for the x-box.

Hmm, you can use my wireless router as a bridge (which is indeed what I was looking for). Too bad I'd need a second one.

Well, good to know that option exists.

Thanks
