I'm going to grad school at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor this fall, and I was wondering what fun things are there to do in Michigan/around Ann Arbor?

Lots of outdoorsy stuff. Irish Hills area should be great for cycling. Lots of little lakes, fishing, camping, walking (wouldn't call it hiking). Day trip distance from Warren Dunes and Lake Erie beaches.

If you have a family, then you must spend a couple days at Greenfield Village / Henry Ford Museum.

I can't believe that it will take you more than 90 seconds to hit town and find tons of stuff. College towns are rockin' all the time.

Ann Arbor proper has all your general college town things - Restaurants, bars, and lots of university related musical things and free museums.

Ann Arbor has tons of nice parks, mostly on the Huron river. Gallup park has canoe/boat rentals.

Nichols Arboretum is a really nice piece of university property on the river. Matthei Botanical Gardens is really nice if you're into plants.

The Wave Field is entertaining if you have kids

There is a drag strip down in Milan...

Lots of outdoors stuff in the general area - both the Waterloo and Pinckney State Recreation areas are nearby... so camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, etc.

Detroit is about 30 minutes away.

In Ann Arbor you have the Ark a great coffee house folk club that has also had some great Jazz Acts. I saw Tony Williams there years ago. Hill Auditorium (on Campus) is a great local venue for concerts and small enough for acts like Anthony Jackson. Ann Arbor is like most college towns, still pretty good for live bands. Keystone Underground is good Jazz club in nearby Ypsilanti. You must experience football at Michigan stadium, a 100,000 plus seater that is a site to behold on game days. MI may even have a good team this year.

The Smallmouth bass fishing is great in the Huron river right in town. And Lake St Clair and the Detroit River are two of the best warm-water fisheries in the country. While MN is called the land of the lakes, MI has far more Lakes, so water-sports are available pretty much everywhere. If you like Auto racing MI speedway (in Brooklyn) is one of the fastest race tracks in the country for both NASCAR and Indy cars.

Detroit is about 45 minutes away, and you'll have the Tigers, Red Wings and the Lions playing if you want to check it out. Also Detroit has some great Gospel Music, the Motown Museum, home of some of the best bass players in the world, and the oldest Jazz club in one continuous location Bakers Keyboard lounge. With the same Grand Piano Monk played on.

Northern MI is also great for fall outdoor activities, check out the Traverse City Petosky area for great fall fishing, And fall colors. The other nice thing is we have the four seasons in MI, sometimes all in one day! Mi is a great place unless you need a job.

There is also a facebook group of Detroit Bass Players, we have a pretty tight group. The most uncompetitive group of musicians I've ever met. We need to have another GTG soon, I'll keep you in the loop.

Ann Arbor is home to the world renowned Fleetwood Diner, a superior dining choice.

I can remember closing up the Old Town Tavern across the street back in '77, though I can't remember if it was called that back then.

Get a sandwich at Zingerman's Deli. Seriously.

My favorite is the #85.

#85 J.V.W.’s Detroit St. BBQ
Zingerman’s BBQ Amish chicken, Nueske’s applewood-smoked bacon & coleslaw on grilled sourdough bread. Served with a side of applewood-smoked baked beans.

If you're a large fellow - yes. Otherwise, make it a half.
