What's your opinion on things like Adblock for Firefox?

Sign in to disble this ad
For those who don't know, Adblock does just what its name says it does - block ads. I've always been a big user of it because I hate when an ugly ad ruins an otherwise beautiful looking site. They distract me and really take away from the experience of the web, so to speak.

The older I get though (I'm nineteen, so that's not saying very much) and the more aware I become about how economics work, the worse I feel about using it. I'm well aware that ads are the major source of income for most sites, but here's the thing - I NEVER click on ads I see. I didn't even before adblocker. From what I understand, the site gets paid by the company running the ad (or the advertising company that made the ad) on a pay-per-click basis. If I never clicked on the ads anyway, what's the difference?

Ads are annoying, and most of them are stupid-looking. I use Adblock to keep annoying popups with noise from ruining my internet experience.

Adblock is great. I don't surf without it.

Exactely. I have never clicked an ad before I discovered AdBlock, and I don't think I ever would. But AdBlock makes pages much cleaner and easier to navigate, they open up faster etc etc. I can't help advising AdBlock to people when I see them browsing a page covered with all the spam that would physically fit into it.

I have yet to be so annoyed with ads on webpages that it has caused me to download something to block them.

Everyone is trying to make a buck, so throwing a little ad around the edges of a webpage isn't much of a bother for me. Heck, there may be something I want to buy even.

I run NoScript and never see ads. Not exactly sure but I think NoScript is better protection as long as you can deal with having to allow things you want. Another thing about NoScript is all web pages run faster.

NoScript is essential. It's incredible how many third-party scripts some sites are running on your machine.

Here's another consideration: If you are in a situation where you occasionally have to use dialup, you'd be amazed at how much these wretched ads and scripts consume your available bandwidth.

Blocking ads and spyware -- what's not to love?

Should I be running adblock in conjunction with NoScript?

NoScript blocks all scripts until you sort out which ones are essential to running the site for your purposes. That can be a bit of a nuisance on some sites, but I think it's worth it. Once you do it, you're done.

Most sites will run fine with 1-3 scripts enabled. All the rest are spyware of some sort.

My use of a site does not mean I agree to have as many as fifteen different third-parties about which I know nothing run their scripts on my machine.

And of course, many scripts are malicious as well.

Also install and use the BetterPrivacy FireFox add-on as it deals with that Flash exploit that allows sites to put on cookies you can't remove (PIEs).

It's interesting that PIEs were originally regarded as criminal hacking, but now all the big names seem to use them.

If you're big enough, your crime simply becomes business as usual on the Internet.

I give money to support TB. Therefore I don't feel bad the least about using adblock.
