Good Morning,
To those who bought class rings from the University they attended, at what point did you start wearing it?

I didn't buy a college ring for this reason.

Well, that's what happened to me, so I figured it was commonplace.

| | | | only reason i would've bought a highschool ring is to desecrate it somehow...
like maybe take a dump in the main entrance and stick the ring in the turd
...something offensive like that |

I didn't buy a ring until about 15 years after graduation, but I became steadily more involved with the university after that point. I realized that it gave me the start and credential it took to establish the basis of my whole career...and when I re-connected with the school, I got more and more involved with the alumni association, eventually becoming an officer and having the chance to connect to the President and the Board of Regents. It's a lot of fun and you meet a great group of people. The folks who are willing to invest a bit of energy in recognizing their school connections are very good people to know. They are a valuable part of your personal network.
It's not sales, and it's not pimping for the school - it's about claiming an important part of your life - something you invested years in. A ring is just one part of claiming the network you're part of. Those who don't stay connected with their school are losing a big networking and support opportunity.
I never wore my high school ring much, but almost 40 years after graduating, I wear my university ring proudly. Not everyone wants to wear one, and that's certainly up to them...I don't care. However, if they do, to me it's a symbol that they're connected to that institution which (hopefully) was an important part of their life for some years.

My parents insisted that I have a HS ring even though I said I'd never wear it. They made me pick one out anyway, I never wore it, and almost immediately I lost track of it. I have no idea where it is today. They also insisted I get a college ring but didn't make me pick one out so I didn't get one.
My feelings? "Oh well". Maybe class rings were just a bigger deal for them back in their time?

...something offensive like that | I probably would have swallowed the ring and then crapped it out the next day. The ring would be harder to clean that way.

| | I'm gonna love and tolerate the **** out of you! | | Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Memphis/Knoxville TN | | | I was one of the few kids that didn't get a HS one. I realized that they were way too expensive for what they were, so when my mom asked me if I wanted one I told her no and to save the money for a rainy day when I found something really cool that I'd much rather have. I found a Warwick Streamer Stage 1 about three years later that I fell in love with and, even though it was much more expensive than the ring, my mom got it for me anyways.

As risible as the whole class ring thing is to me, aside from the sheer hideousness of these overpriced monstrosities, I somehow retain the useless info that you weren't "supposed" to wear them until the final semester of your senior year, with a decent expectation of graduation.
I don't think I've ever seen anyone wear a class ring.
What do people buy them for, I wonder?

I probably won't get one in college.
