When I was a noob I......

Let this be the thread to tell us all of your dumbest noob mistakes, so not only can we laugh at each other, but maybe a few noob’s can learn from our mistakes. I’ll start this with one of my worst. When I was a noob. I had a vintage silver face fender bassman head handed down to me and when it mysteriously stopped working one day, I through it out with the trash. DO NOT THROUGH AWAY YOUR BROKEN GEAR WITHOUT CONSULTING SOMEONE OF EXPERIENCE. Also I feel I should mention that although my post is bass related, I decided to put this in off topic to keep the info you may provide abroad to the many stupid things we do that inherently effect our lives.

bass related:

- I got a fretless jazz instead of a fretless precision bass. Tried them both in the store and the precision felt and sounded so much better to my ears. But in the local music scene at the time a Jazz Bass was very popular. I cared what other would think of my bass.

- I got an awesome Trace Elliot rig for cheap... and sold it for a much cheaper price because I didn't knew what it was worth and I needed the money.

- I thought a BOSS MetalZone would do all the work in sounding "metal".

I thought the P in P Bass stood for passive. So i was calling any passive bass a 'P bass'.

Also, i thought sound-quality was directly proportionate to the number of pickups: more = better

When I was a noob...

...I sold a gk800rb for $25 (14) years ago

...I gave back an early 60's p bass that I was given for free, thinking that it sounded "dead" (20 years ago). Did I mention the les paul that was too heavy? IDIOT

...I thought that the pretty girl in the car on the freeway was holding a sign that said dome. Turns out it was do me.

Ha! Dummy!

Everyone knows that sound quality is directly proportionate to the number of pole pieces.

Therefore: anything with blades is teh suck.

When I was a noob long, long ago, I used to use one of those coiled instrument cables as a speaker cable. How I didn't fry my amp remains a mystery. Thankfully a hi-fi geek friend put me straight when he saw my act of ignorance.

The fail is palpable here.

Sigh... Here we go... Get the fail signs ready...

1) In about 1984 or so, bought a 75 J bass from my hometown music store. Clear finish, but cracked and crazed due to Illinois weather extremes. I thought, that doesn't look very good. I'll just strip it and refinish it. Slapped on some paint remover... nothing. Tried sanding... barely touched it. Got frustrated and just put the whole thing, case and all, in the dumpster of my apartment building.

2) Had a late 70's pre-EB Stingray. Got away from playing in bands for a few years, so I took it and traded it in on an acoustic guitar.

Hi, my name's John... and I'm an idiot...
