why do people start pouring, then raise the container up, then lower it before finishing?

to get a better look at how full it really is?? I could see depth perception playing a part in why people would subconsciously do it.

Start off low, so you dont spill it everywhere and look like a dumb ass.

Go up higher as to say, look i can move while I pour and look how high I go, I think grown ups still have child like fun sometimes.[subconsciously of course]

Then lower it either because.

A) you realize you were missing some or splashing
B) You want to show off because you can go up AND down.
C) As the container empties its not as predictable and you still dont want to look like a dumb ass.

When someone is pouring you a drink of really expensive whiskey or other intoxicant, lowering the glass and raising it abruptly causes more liquid to fall into the glass, because you increase the distance from the glass to the bottle, more volume it required to fill it, and the magic of physics causes more liquid to be pulled out of the bottle and into your glass. Of course, if your friend wise up to this trick, they will just lower the bottle with your glass.
