Don't believe them!!! I was changing the battery in my bass and I was having a hard time getting the backplate off, and my boyfriend goes, "Here. Let me show you.. " and grabs a flat-head screwdriver and popped it off, alright.. but left a big scratch in it. GRRRRRRR. It was flawless up until now. I've only had it 4 months.

If it helps any, about all used basses have chips or scratches around the cover. The good side of it is, now you can identify it. 20 years from now you could see it hanging in a shop and say That was MY bass!

I bought it new.. and I will never sell this bass. It's my first and I'm in love with it. Though, I'm looking for a 5 string, this bass will always be my favorite. It means a lot to me. He DOES have a bass, too.. but it's a Fender Marcus Miller Jazz bass, and I don't think I could bring myself to do harm to that to spite him. Lol.

I know how you feel. I have been through it with all my basses. Last night I took my Gibson out to play it (just got it last week) and I noticed a small dent & scratch in the back of it. I have no idea how or when it happened, but it was there. I felt like I got punched. I was so bummed I couldn't even play. I'm better today, and I think it sounds better, it's getting some mojo. Well, that's what I tell myself... lol

Hahaha. I'll try to stay positive. His Marcus Miller has been dropped repeatedly by his bands bass player, so I guess that all just happens.. :P

Meh. Basses are meant to be played and gigged with imo, so they'll develop scratches over the course of their life. My basses get jostled around, dropped, banged into walls, etc all the time.

Look at it this way: any time you need ammo for a guilt trip...

Did you check the battery? It's probably the battery.

I'd kick his butt but yeah basses never stay perfect. Nobody messes with mine so if there's a nick, I did it.

At the end of the day, basses are a tool. If you are constantly worrying about damaging them then you won't be able to get full use out of them. Just accept it as being part of life, and next time it gets damaged you won't be as bothered because it's not the first time.

Hey, I'm sure Marcus Miller had a few fretjobs in his iconic bass' life. Start a trend with yer BF's copy.

The first cut is the deepest. The next inevitable ding won't hurt nearly as much. It does suck when someone else has the honor of producing the first blemish though.

My guitarist dropped his guitar on the driveway yesterday and took a little chunk out of the body. He was pretty upset by that.

I'd get some polishing compound and tell him he'll be RUBBING IT OUT until the scratch is gone
