Don't believe them!!! I was changing the battery in my bass and I was having a hard time getting the backplate off, and my boyfriend goes, "Here. Let me show you.. " and grabs a flat-head screwdriver and popped it off, alright.. but left a big scratch in it. GRRRRRRR. It was flawless up until now. I've only had it 4 months.

It's my first and I'm in love with it. Though, I'm looking for a 5 string, this bass will always be my favorite. It means a lot to me. He DOES have a bass, too.. but it's a Fender Marcus Miller Jazz bass, and I don't think I could bring myself to do harm to that to spite him. Lol.

Last night I took my Gibson out to play it (just got it last week) and I noticed a small dent & scratch in the back of it. I have no idea how or when it happened, but it was there. I felt like I got punched. I was so bummed I couldn't even play. I'm better today, and I think it sounds better, it's getting some mojo. Well, that's what I tell myself... lol

I'll try to stay positive. His Marcus Miller has been dropped repeatedly by his bands bass player, so I guess that all just happens.. :P

If you are constantly worrying about damaging them then you won't be able to get full use out of them. Just accept it as being part of life, and next time it gets damaged you won't be as bothered because it's not the first time.
