When you get a record deal, is making a Christmas recording mandatory?

Is it part of the package? Today, I heard a U2 Christmas song over the Muzak system today. Did they load them up with Guiness and make them do it?

If you're talking about Baby Come Home For Christmas or whatever it is, it was done about 25 years ago on A Very Special Christmas Album, Vol 1, of which there are many volumes now. Proceeds go to charity. Sounds exactly like something U2 would do. The Eagles had an earlier version, don't know if their version was the first.

^^^ yup. Got that on vinyl.

I had no label representation at the time, and participated in a Christmas record 6 years ago. Sometimes it's fun.

and I do have label representation and I've never participated in a Christmas record. I've never seen a contract with any implications about Christmas records.

IT probably depends a bit on the genre. Pop Maybe, Nazi speed metal not so much, Jewish Bar Mitzvah band, never.
