Where can I get the best prices on a rackmount server case?

Hi there everyone!

I was just wondering if i could tap into the collective knowledge of talkbass, and I was wondering if someone could help me find a good price (other than ebay) on a 3u-4u rackmount server case (empty) that accepts ATX motherboards...any ideas?

Thanks!

Just like bass, how much do you want to pay?
Also, what is the purpose of the case? Simple AD/DC server, or a file server with 16 bays that you need hotswap capability?

Check ebay or craigslist.

I've got a few that all came used out of commercial installations.

New, they're EXPENSIVE. They can also be noisy. I've got a bunch of 1u dual Xeons with 4Gb of RAM - that spend 99% of their time turned off as they're simply not designed to exist in a domestic space - they are just too LOUD. Even the old Dual P3 system that I do leave on 24-7 as a home server is pretty loud.

If you can live with the noise, then look for used rackmount servers. If you collect them they're dirt cheap. Mine all worked in the movie special effects industry before they came to live with me.

Honestly, your best bet is by getting a Rackable Systems server.
Not sure what the purpose of this "regular computer" is, but here's a link to the eBay listings for Rackable Systems:
http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trk...All-Categories

I've seen 1U through 4U servers on there. They're pretty decent cases and systems all together. It does fall under the "you get what you pay for" side of things though, as there are a few quirks.
