Sorry to hear about your grandpa.

kayak.com is the place I go to for flight searches - but $500 sounds about the best you're going to get, unless you want to just camp out at the airport and wait for a standby.

Actually, I just took a look - MSP <-> SFO is lower than $500, depending on dates. You may be in luck.

I don't know - I've seen them with lists on the screens saying which of the people waiting for standbys got a seat so it's definitely still possible - but I don't know the price.

Call the airline. Generally they give really good bereavement rates and should be able to help out in this case.

I've always used Travelocity, but it's only advantageous if you have time to shop.

If you fly Monday it's $309 on Northwest.

Try:

Mobissimo.com
Sidestep.com
Cheaptickets.com

The more flexible you make your flight schedule, the better the odds of grabbing a deal.

I've been getting last minute tickets from Rochester to San Fran for around $300 on Orbitz. Start there and good luck and sorry about the Grandfather.

Plus if you ask for the additional bereavement discount it shouldn't be too bad. Just do it before it's too late today!

As mentioned earlier, check on bereavement discounts.

Several years ago, my wife and I had to fly to MI on short notice due to a death in the family. This is how Continental Airlines did it at the time... We paid for the FULL fare upfront. After returning home we sent them a letter with a copy of the death certificate attached. After they get the letter they credit your card for half the fare.

Good luck and sorry for your loss.

If southwest flies out of your airport then check the southwest website. They often have good deals. Also jetblue has been expanding these days but i don't know if they're flying to San Fran. If so check their site too because they have had some incredible deals lately

Also is there any smaller airlines flying from different airports nearby?

Back in Melbourne, we have Tullermarine which is the International airport, if you drive an extra hour (or an hour less for some people) there's a smaller airport with budget airlines flying from there. Might not be as comfortable of a flight (smaller planes/more crammed), but could save $$.

JetBlue for sure goes to the SFO. I flew into there for a visit to San Francisco over Spring Break. It was something like 400 and change from NY to CA and back.
