I spent a few years in NC when I was little, back in the '70s, and there were some restaurants my parents wouldn't go to. I asked them why, and was told that even though we were white, we wouldn't go because blacks were not welcome in those restaurants. Even though segregation and discrimination was illegal by that time, what the restaurant owners would do is hand an axe handle to each white family that came in, so that any black people that came in would see a room full of white people with axe handles, and turn around and leave of their own accord, without any
verbal discrimination against them.

Things have changed some since then, but I wouldn't be too surprised about a furniture store with a racial advertisement, whether joking or not.
