8th grade history class. We shared a common interest in making weaponry and blowing things up.

BACKSTORY
The townwide 4th grade spelling bee was held at my school and some kid from another school on the other side of town won it. I said "well, I'll never see him again. good luck in life."

FAST FORWARD
Then, the summer after 5th grade, i went to a little film-making and tv production camp thing at the local cable access station, I met this kid there and we became good friends. School came, and I found that the kid from the camp I went to was in my class. I found that we had a lot in common and we became best friends.

FAST FORWARD ONCE MORE
The next year, he said "Did you know that I won the spelling bee in 4th grade? Bet you forgot!"

Funny how that works.

Two best friends - met in high school, 1964.

Still best friends 44 years later.

One is a retired career Army Sergeant with two great kids - moved back to our hometown and drives bus for a living. Says he had enough stress in his Army postings and likes helping people with the bus gig.

The other is gay, lives in long Beach with his significant other, and works at Bank of America. He is one of the nicest people I've ever met and unfortunately I don't get to see him very often.

In high school, we spent so much time together we could finish each other's sentences. 44 years later we can still fill n the punch lines to each other's jokes.

Summer school when I was 10, we hated each other then and up until we both went to a mutual friends birthday party when we were 12. Been best friends ever since.

9th grade home room, 8:45 AM. He was eating Count Chocula out of a sandwich bag, and I was drinking my morning can of Coke and drawing a picture of Hulk Hogan leg-dropping a car in half. We're both laughing while our teacher who looked like Roger Daltry circa. "Live at Leeds" was taking attendance. She got fed up with our laughter, and came over to scream at us, and while doing so, drooled on my friend's jacket. He said "Awww, come on!" and I shot coke out of my nose because I was laughing so hard

We still laugh about that to this day. No joke.
