Wanting a drink at work.
Needing a drink to work.

That's a good example in my opinion. Replace "work" with any other activity.

lol.

I think they're pretty much the same. "Alcoholism" is a very wide term. Just look at the way it's used in English legal cases!

This thread makes me want a drink....

I think the difference between the two comes when heavy drinking becomes something the person MUST do to function...

Textbook definition of alcoholism (or other addiction) is that it is significantly negatively affecting more than one key life area (family, work, social) and that the user/drinker is unwilling or unable to stop the behavior despite those negative effects.

When you hide a half-pint of vodka between your car seats.

And yes, I'm related to him.

And I won't cry when he dies on the freeway.

The problem here is that he's liable to take innocent folks out with him.

I'm ready to call up the MI state police, and let them know when he's on the road.

It's so pathetic.

I have a "problem drinking" anything but good vodka.
"Alcoholism" would mean I wouldn't care what kind of vodka I drank.

You really should do that. It's only a matter of time before he kills someone or gravely injures them.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, drunk drivers are a huge problem that, in some aspects, society doesn't take very seriously.

When it goes from being something you like to do, to something you NEED to do. If you get really cranky and upset without it and are desperate for it.

By technical definition, I'm an alchoholic, but I know that I'm not because I easily don't need it. And go without it lots of times. It's just a big part of my culture. When you know when to say no, and can, you're not an addict.

If you even *think* you have a drinking problem you probably do. I quit 2 years ago after many years of denial. Interestingly playing the bass was part of the reason I quit. I was really into learning to slap and drinking was slowing the progress, so I quit. I owe my life to slap bass.

My drinking problem was that I got 2 hangovers and decided I'm better off never getting drunk again. I'm much happier now!

- If you need it, rather than want it.
- If you find yourself seriously asking the question, you should think twice.

And more subjectively, if you find yourself having more than two or three drinks at one sitting two or more times a week, you really ought to consider that you're well on the road to having a problem. You may not be there yet, but you can see it from where you are.
