I went as a guest of a one of the news magazines. The event is massive: something like 2000 people (journalists, TV people, hollywood types, politicians, generals, pundits).

The president and vice president were there (and so was Senator Charlie Wilson, Sam Donaldson, Tracy Ulman, Pam Anderson, some boy band and the guy who plays Kumar....)

Secret service everywhere.

TV host Craig Ferguson did a piece.

The tradition of the event is that the president gives a funny speech. It was pretty remarkable to watch W poke fun at Dick Cheney ("riding shotgun") and the republican and democratic candidates.

One of the stranger events I've ever been to. Anybody else go?

I saw it on TV. I thought the prez was funny as hell. Good show overall.

The whole red carpet thing on C-Span is just bizarre. What passes for celebrity in DC is pretty funny, certainly a lot funnier than Mo Rocca's "entertainment". I kept thinking there must be some ABC/Disney tie-in. Bush was funnier than the year he was searching for WMDs under his desk in the Oval Office, but Cheney stole the show at the Radio / TV dinner the week before.
