Thumbs up who was the best marine in Aliens

OK so it's obviously Hudson, but indulge me...

yes the original is beloved of film critics and Ian Holm fans alike but let's face it, the best film in the franchise is no.2 with big tanks and machine guns and hundreds of aliens running around on the ceiling going EEEE and biting people's faces off and getting splattered at close range and melting stuff etc, as any fule kno.

and of course the MARINES who are the baddest wisecracking mixed gender space soldier type dudes and dudettes yet to have been realised on the silver screen, apparently borrowed wholesale from a nearby Vietnam film without the knowledge of the director.

but: who was the baddest marine in James Cameron's classic shoot em up sequel? we are not talking the toughest, though that is a factor, they are also rated on wisecracking ability, embodiment of movie cliche and the ability to keep a cigar glued between teeth at all times.

Hicks - yes OK he is the male lead/love interest but really, how much fun would he be on a night out? he would probably just be all monosyllabic and moody and then fall asleep in the corner of the nightclub under the cigarette machine.

Apone - clearly a contender. channelling the spirit of every cinematic drill sergeant ever played, his cigar-chomping no nonsense attitude is classic bad***-with-heart-of-gold. 'be my guest' indeed.

Vasquez - yes! proving that you can be tough yet ladylike while dispatching space beasties with a big ****-off machine gun, she is the original riot grrrrrl who could probably drink you under the table and still look good in a vest. her relationship with Frankenstein-alike co gunner Drake is never fully explored.

Drake - man of few words, probably not a great thinker, but certainly hard as nails. he has a few good lines and is best buddies in some capacity with Vasquez, so we like him.

Hudson - comedy sidekick, over-user of the word 'man', jittery in combat, unwilling victim of robotic knife pranks - and yet somehow he has the best lines and injects a bit of humanity into an otherwise slightly stodgy team.

Crowe/Frost/Ferro/Weisbaskeieieiq/other - OK these lot don't really have a chance to shine, and most of them are seat-filler and special effects fodder, but we salute them none the less. semper fi, chaps.

what say you, Talkbass?

one of my fave movies, ever. Vasquez is my fave. Hudson is infinitely more quoteable....but when Vasquez shouts "let's rock!" before opennin hell upon the xenos with that sidearm machine gun (against orders, btw...also badass, she kept a few magazines, remember?) I got goosebumps.

Hudson: Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?

Vasquez: No, have you?

Badass.

Apone is a close third, but still took orders from that gutless wanker who got taken out by a falling box (Gorman?)

THAT'S IT MAN. GAME OVER MAN! GAME OVER!

Bill Paxton was just awesome in that role.

Also probably the best quote out of that movie.

I watched all Alien films over and over again. (Except Alien Ressurection.)
Big fan here. The first one is probably my favourite movie overall of all time.

edit: btw, you have Hudson twice

Hudson had a few great lines...his character provided some comic relief. I saw Aliens the weekend it was released in a packed theatre...pretty intense.
"Vazques thought it was 'illegal alien' & signed up".
"How do I get out this chicken ____ outfit"?
"I'm ready man...ready to Get_It_On"!
"We're on an express elevator to Hell...going down"!
"I say we grease this rat ____ SOB. You're dog meat, pal".

...and then there's Hicks' "Eat this"!

My vote is Vasques...then Apone...then Hicks.

I just like the "game over" part.

I instantly imagine how he sounds. That panic in his voice.

I also love his ranting in the landing ship, where he sums up the inventory of weapons.
"sharp sticks"

edit: full quote

I'm ready, man, check it out. I am the ultimate badass! State of the badass art! You do NOT wanna **** with me. Check it out! Hey Ripley, don't worry. Actually my favourite "GAME OVER" is when they got the news that the nuclear reactor is going to explode.

Maybe that's because you hear the exact same catch phrase a second time in the movie.

Each and every one a freaking PUSSY!

Now if THIS guy had been in that movie...

...there would have been no need for any of those ridiculous sequels!

I keep sending it up the chain that in order for us (USMC) to be truely expeditionary, we need to incorporate Space Battalions into our standard Marine Corps regiments. It keeps getting shot down though, so Im at a loss. Sorry guys, but Im still trying.

Vasquez it is.

What a great movie. I have to watch that one again; it's been a while.

Ripley: I say we pull back and nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

The first one is better, but I came in here to say it is impossible to see Bill Paxton in the flesh and not think of
GAME OVER, MAN!

I just bought it today. As many times as I have seen this movie, I've yet to own it.

6 bucks at Wal Mart. The extended edition. Win!

+1

"mad about you" came on the air around the time "aliens" had firmly face-hugged my brain.

My fav hands down has to be Vasquez. She's just bad@$$ in the movie, other than Ripley that is...and the Queen Alien. Definitely in my top 10 favorite movies of all time.
