Anyone? I was fighting it for so long (the subject matter seemed absolutely ridiculous), but as the reviews pile on nothing but sheer acclaim--its got a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes generally, and a 100% from the top critics--I can't help but say it. I'm going to see it opening night.
David Fincher is a director whom I have a love-hate relationship with. He's a talented filmmaker, but sometimes the weakness of his material overwhelms his projects (i.e. Fight Club, Alien 3). When he's on, though, the results are stellar (Se7en).
Anyone else excited for the film? |

lowsound | Lemme elaborate on why, even though, at the end of the day, it really does come down to whether or not it inspired you.
The film strikes me as a terrifyingly superficial look at a couple of important issues--namely anti-consumerism and the philosophy of nihilism. I really can't put it any better than Roger Ebert did in his review, when he said Tyler Durden sounds "like a man who tripped over the Nietzsche display on his way to the coffee bar in Borders." The themes aren't developed very well at all, and the film quickly devolves from what might have been a great look at the morality behind our culture into people beating the hell out of each other.
Which leads me to another problem I have with Fight Club: it falls into what I like to call Full Metal Jacket syndrome--an excellent first act followed by mediocrity. Once the fighting starts, the meaning gets shafted.
Ultimately, Fight Club (the film) strikes me as a movie designed to appeal to fourteen-year old boys and people who failed out of Philosophy 101.
As far as the book is concerned, Chuck P's writing has always struck me as weak and shallow. Fight Club is no exception. He's the Nickleback of Nihilism. |

As far as the movie itself, as the OP said, I have been fighting with the idea of seeing it. I seldom see movies in theaters these days so I doubt I will, but I'll definitely be looking for it on dvd or netflix. |

I read the book, The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich, which the film is based on. The book was awesome and I feel that the movie is really going to bring it to life. I don't think I'm going to rush out to see it this weekend, but I definitely be seeing it in the next couple of weeks.
