who else makes stencils?

Sign in to disble this ad
ive always had an interest in making stencils, and ive made a few to various success. something about a razor blade and cardboard speaks to me so much more than a paintbrush ever did.

my band's logo came out pretty well, as well as my pantera logo (that made an excellent shirt!), but im stepping it up a notch. my next couple projects include darkwing duck and colonel H. mother****in' stinkmeaner (i makes money, holla atcha boi!).

ive got my work cut out for me.

who else makes stencils? what have you got? lets see 'em!

My band plans on making a stencil ourselves. This logo I made from converting a 1971 photograph my mother took at the LA Zoo should transfer to a stencil pretty well.

If I need a stencil, I cut it on the laser engraver I have at work.

on one hand, that takes the fun out of making them, but it would certainly make better stencils.

i normally use the sort of cardboard that soda boxes are made of. thin enough to cut with one stroke, but rigid enough to hold up.

pizza box.. thats not a terrible idea.

Get one of those rotary wheel cutters from the fabric section of an arts and crafts store if you need to make curved cuts. They can do it in one continuous motion and won't catch and drag the stencil material (works like a pizza cutter but better).

Print them, place an acetate on top. Cut out the black zone and mount the acetate on a doubled cardboard frame.

It is also possible to place floating (unattached) parts using a basic grid made of metal wire.

So uh... are how-to's out of the question here? Would be cool to know how to do this with bugger all knowledge and skill in art.

I have a few stencils lying around from my graffiti days and a few from when I custom-sprayed shirts. I just kind of lost interest though. I still make my own stickers, however, including a custom Evangelion Unit 01 sticker for my Fender P-Special.
