How was it prepared? And what does it taste like if you can describe it?

Horse Goulash, on a visit to the Czech Republic in the late 90s. Very tasty, not super-tender meat but lots of flavour.

Sorry, but I've never eaten horse flesh. I can say truthfully that I saw it sold in some grocery stores in Nebraska when I was a kid back in the 1960's. My family on both sides having come from agricultural back grounds valued horses too much too much to eat them for food. However many folks back then, weren't so sentimental about horses. Both of my Grandfathers weren't against eating horse meat per-se, but they considered it an act of real need, born of poverty to eat horse meat. Cattle and Hogs were for the dinner table in their way of thinking.

Weirdly enough you can get that in almost any grocery store here, but only smoked in thin slices like ham. It's called "Hamburger meat" even if it has absolutely nothing to do with either Hamburg or hamburgers. I think calling it "horse ham" or something similar would slow sales.

It's tasty. Very good on sandwiches.

What else are you supposed to do with racing horses that don't collect enough prize money?

At one point, I was considering trying horse meat. The idea scared me at the time, though...

You can find it in Mexico, it is legal, I am sure many taco stands use horse meat. However, when I was in the Army horse meat was commun, meat was red as hell, very tasty, specially after being walking under the sun for 15 hours.

Horse meat typically isn't raised on same standard as say traditional livestock. Horse meat that goes to market (in the US anyway) isn't regulated to see where the horse was from or what the horse was fed (food and needles) before slaughter. I worked in IT at a horse race track for a couple years, I wouldn't want to eat anything that was taken to market off those horses.

I can't say I wouldn't try it. Would I personally buy it. No.

Have you any idea what they feed cows, pigs, and chickens in the country? It may be "regulated" but it includes hormones, antibiotics, and pesticide residue, not to mention that they are feeding animals the "wrong" food (cows were meant to eat grass, not corn) and a cannibal diet.

Back on topic- I never have eaten horse meat, and I really don't understand why the administration is legalizing this.

It isn't legal? Horse meat is much healthier than beef is. It is a more complete protein and also contains anti-oxidants. A lot of European bodybuilders and athletes eat horse meat. Alistar Overeem is a great example, he started eating horse meat, changed a few things about his workouts and went from someone that easily fought at 205lbs to someone that has to cut weight to fight at 265lbs, in just over two years.

I have eaten it many times but only mixed with other types of meat. Thats very common.. (at least up here it is) I even have eaten whale many times. I have no problem with it at all. Most horses (and whales) are given a much much better life than e.g a chicken...thats a tragedy.

I strongly suspect that I've eaten cat at least once or twice, considering the places I used to eat at when I was at college.
