The Who on PBS

It's pledge time (again) on PBS and right now they're showing The Who live in 1977. Wish I could have seen them back in the day, what an exciting, dynamic show they put on. One of the three bands (along with Led Zep and Rush) I wish I could have seen back in the 70s. I don't know what bass Entwistle is playing, but I noticed the fretboard inlays are the individual notes at each position instead of the usual dots or blocks. It must have been deafeningly loud, too, judging by the monstrous backline they had.

Lucky you. During pledge drives, my local PBS station (WNET in New York) likes to run a lot of special shows featuring aging doo-wop groups of the 50's and early '60s.

Tonight they're running am R&B program called Love Train: Sound of Philadelphia. It's OK, I guess. Just not my thing...

I want to get that DVD. It's a recent release of the more complete concert (or two nights?) filmed for the film "The Kids Are Alright". Two songs "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" were used in the original film, the rest hasn't been seen since. It does not have a particularly good reputation, according to Klein's commentary in "The Kids Are Alright" the rest of the concert wasn't particularly good.

That is Keith Moon's last live performance. He died months later.

Entwistle's bass is a custom build from Alembic, he was one of the first to use Alembic basses.

Read about it here: http://www.thewho.net/whotabs/equipm...ear-74-85.html

Yeah, that Alembic is the Spider Explorer. Has all the notes inlaid on the fretboard and a nice silver spiderweb inlaid in the body...pretty sweet bass. Saw it in person at the Hard Rock Vault in Florida when I was on vacation 5 years ago doing the Disney stuff. Awesome.
