Who's seen Les Mis?
 

Okay, I was expecting to hate it. It got off to a slow start but the last couple hours were extremely moving. 3 hours later and I'm still speechless, can't get the music out of my head. One of the best movies I've ever seen. I've never really been able to follow the theatrical version so it easily caught me off guard. What'd you guys think?

Plan on seeing it, just haven't yet.

I've tried reading the book countless times but I can never make it beyond the first couple scenes/chapters so I don't know how I'd manage through the movie.

Never was a fan of 'musicals', but when I read that the actors sang everything 'live' while doing the scenes, I was quite impressed. They had a piano player in the actors' ear buds, with mics placed all over the set. The orchestra was then added to the track later.

Heck, that is more 'real' than most concerts these days. Might just have to check it out. I heard it is pretty amazing on pretty much every level.

Yeah, some of the singing was a bit weak but as a whole the movie was incredible.

In some ways, I'd rather hear it 'weak but real' than fake and overproduced. At least these days, a little out of tune and out of time actually sounds good compared to metronomic and tuner like 'fake perfection'.

My parents saw it and didn't like it.

I'm not at all a fan of musicals, but the cast and the technical aspects have me intrigued enough to want to see it.

A very different experience than the Broadway production in my view. I thought the intimacy provided in the movie allowed for following the story more easily, but at the expense of theatrical spectacle. I thought that Russell Crowe's acting was riveting, although his singing was not. Hugh Jackman, IMHO, had a better voice, but his acting didn't draw me in as much. My wife felt just the opposite. We both agreed that Anne Hathaway did a great job (all in a single take btw). We also both agreed that while the movie should be seen on the big screen, it is only just OK. Both of us enjoyed the stage show more.

The closest I will get to seeing it is when Ann Hathaway hosted SNL and did that opening skit poking fun at it.

That is pretty hilarious! I personally really liked the movie. Not one that I'll want to watch again and again but really well done and certainly a departure from the norm.
