Turned out I did much better than I anticipated and just used that test for my college app. Checked it off of the to-do list and kept on going. |

If I don't do good now, I can always take it multiple times senior year. So it's just practice, but I am studying for it so hopefully I won't have to take it again. |

It's useful to get in there and just kind of acclimate yourself to the situation, but not a necessity. (FWIW I never took any kind of prep course for it since I think they're wastes of money and a scam on top of that).

My kid took it twice as a junior, and will take it again next weekend. As for the suggestion "prep courses are a waste of time," she did no prep the first time, and had perfectly mediocre scores. Practiced for the second time with the College Board book and her scores went up by 230 points. She still needs to bring her CR and math scores up a bit more to go from "soft" to "comfortable," so this summer she took a general prep course and a "maximum math" course through our local Saturday Academy. Two (bright) neighborhood kids took those courses and both ended up north of 2300 (and at Columbia). I'm... hopeful she'll see similar improvement.

I took it last year and got something like 1800.
EDIT: Mom says 1730.

I took it for the first time in my Junior year, which was last April, and scored an 1100 with just the reading and math and with all three parts, I got a 1720. Most colleges only look at the reading and math anyway, because most people blow off the writing portion.
I took again for the 2nd time this past Saturday and it was much easier this time, IMO.

EDIT: Mom says 1730. | Recently. I'm 5 years out of high school, so I dunno.

27 and 31 ACT with ~32 superscore
1300 and 1340 SAT.
I did it because it allowed me to take it again and improve my score. They both felt easier on the subsequent efforts even though the SAT really didn't improve a lot.

I took it as a junior, no prep course, no studying really (actually forgot about it until the morning I was supposed to be there - was very nearly late), and got an even 2000. I'm not that smart, just a good test taker. Worth factoring in if you or your kid is going to take it, IMO. Not that you should be as unprepared as me, but...you know what I mean.

I actually was out partying the night before mine. I totally forgot about it until my mom woke me up at 7 the next morning and was saying that I had to be at the school by 8 to take it. Still managed a 29 that time, and a 31 the second time I took it. |

I was pleasantly surprised by my score after that first try, so never bothered taking it again. I don't remember what I got, but this was back when 1,600 was the max. I scored in the low-mid 1,200's, if my aging memory serves me correctly. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
