Why is 3D filming back?

I just don't understand it. They probably had a good reason to stop it in the 60's, 70's or whatever, so why is this crap back now? Like movies weren't bad enough already...

I blame James Cameron.

I also blame Hollywood for running out of ideas 20 years ago, and being desperate for some new kitch thing to lure people back into the seats. This goes hand in hand with the ass patting studios are doing with home electronics makers to temper broadcast televisions tepid offerings by migrating the 3D experience into homes when it just plain is not that neat or necessary. Nothing has a shelf life anymore. BluRay and the like have been waning in sales far quicker than DVD's before it. Across the board phyical media sales are down, so companies are resting their existence in this technology and will not stop shoving it down our throats.

And the masses will buy in to fill a fake "need" just like they did with every other whizz-bang shoved to market. Enough already.

I like it, thank you Hollywood. Now if they could only get life to be in 3D, that would be awesome. I tried wearing the glasses during my normal daily activities, but it made stuff blurry.

The technology is now ready to make 3D actually look good, unlike when it was first introduced with the red and blue plastic "glasses". Today's 3D is spectacular and very realistic and it's what gets people into theaters instead of waiting for movies to come out on DVD.

+1

I sat down in plush leather sofa of a demo suite, put the 3D glasses over my prescription frames and waited to be dazzled by what the sales guy assured me was the latest 3D TV technology.

The images (which just like HD demos a while back are hand picked to be the very best demonstration media that the techology is capable of) of a shark swimming around a reef with technicolour fish and anenomes everywhere came onto the screen....

There was an good impression of depth perception, but the shark, the fish and the people in another scene all retained their strange 2D quality.

The best think I could liken it to were those Victorian toy theatres where 2D cardboard cutouts are pushed around on sticks.

There's a way to go yet IMHO.

I don't like 3D movies, etc. It's too much of a "in your face" experience. I don't need nor do I want that much stimulation to enjoy video.

As for Blue Ray sales falling quicker than it did for DVD, keep in mind that DVDs weren't competing against on-demand video like Blue Ray is today. My family and I have watched many on-demand movies via Verizon FIOS and we're happy with the service.

+1 to hover's post.

Think of the guy with the 59" HD plasma with 1080p and a good surround sound system. What's his motivation to go to the theater vs waiting for something to be on blu ray or on demand?

Outside of wanting to see a film right when it comes out or enjoying the movie going experience (something I think has long been declining as a factor) there really isn't any.\

So the movie industry is trying to find ways to lure people to the theater by incorporating elements that can't easily be replicated at home. I'm sure the reappearance of 3D films is just the first of many such tactics.

Yeah, try and make that movie theater popcorn at home. It just doesn't taste the same.

It only tastes "that much better" because you paid 11 dollars for it.

kidding Bro.

Here's the recipe: 3 day old popped corn, and butter flavored canola oil, and judicious application of heat-lamp. Unless, of course, the cardboard tub imparts flavor. THAT's ANOTHER THING: if I am paying 4 bucks minimum for a popcorn, give me a tub, and not some lame pre-filled bag.

The new 3D technology doesn't work at all, it just looks like a digital pop up book. where if you lose focus on part of the screen your eyes have to readjust to get the effect.

I don't like it at all. Makes your eyes tired by the end of whatever you are watching.

In 2008 Hollywood had had yet another bleak earning season for the year. In desperation, they decided they would put out movies in 3-D, which they were convinced audiences would flock to, and through the higher ticket prices, that was going to "save" Hollywood and the movie industry!

From 2009, here is an article written about 3-D saving the movie industry.

It was doomed to fail, and has! I was going to write a blog post about it at the time, but never got around to it.

My brain can't see the 3D effect; if I put the glasses on in the theatre it just looks blurry and gives me a headache after a while.

I don't know whether its because I know it's not really 3D and my eyes won't accept it, or because I'm just too dumb to 'see' it.

It is actually a known issue for some people that the effect doesn't work.

And why it isn't a good idea:

And the simple test:

Just don't try and join the Army if you fail that test.

Called "Stereo-blind". Which would be a cool name for a band.

I can't do the holographic posters either... You know, the ones where there are just repeating patterns, but if you stare at them long enough, you suddenly see a dinosaur or a sail boat... I've stared at one for 15 minute, and all I see are the repeating patterns.

It's a depth perception thing. I'm far sighted, and happen to have one eye that is much more dominant that the other... my left eye. Curiously enough, my left is more dominant even though the right eye actually has better vision and needs less correction when wearing glasses or contacts. This is almost certainly the case with Jimbo too... Plus, He's English... Which is also why they can't win at tennis either!!!! :-)

Thats because most movies are not actually shot using 3D cameras, but rather shot in 2D and rendered to 3D after the fact. The result is a cheap, pop-up book, look with the corners all washed out. It sucks and can totally kill a movie.

3D is great for cheesy horror movies, though!

Oh buuuurrrrrnn.

Anyway. I know my stereovision/binocular vision are fine, but when I go see a 3D movie it's just like my eyes are constantly trying to 'wake up' from what they're seeing. As a result of this I don't see the 3D pictures, I just see a confusing, headache-inducing blurr around all the edges.

No kidding, I thought I was different. I actually can see it, but it looks like crap and gives me a serious headache in 10 minutes.
