There's a lot of dudes on Harleys that think they're the coolest thing on two wheels. And there's a lot of crotch rocket jerk offs. I used to have a Honda road bike that I totally loved and a Harley that was OK. The only guys I think are kinda dorks are guys on Gold Wings.

I took a ride to a town that has signs warning against load pipes yet is a very big biker destination. My buddy was riding a Harley with custom pipes and I on my 650r and his brother was on a Suzuki Bandit. Anyway, we finished lunch and went to head home.

He rev'ed it and pulled out of the parking space by the curb where we were at and rode maybe 50ft to a red light.

He was promptly pulled over and ticked by a bicycle cop. I laughed my rear off that he go pulled over by a dude on a bicycle, but it sucked for him. It was like. $100 fine or something. We haven't been back to that town since.

Point is, I have taken several saftey courses and not one of them said, get you some loud pipes and you'll be fine. All my instructors rode gold wings and you can't hear them at all. If your really interested in motorcycle saftey, take a course and read everything by David Hough.

They might be dorks, but I wish I had half the riding skills most of those "dorks" have. Anyone can go straight on a motorcycle, but try evasive maneuvering on a gold wing, then come talk to me.

I'm not saying there dorks, I don't care what ppl drive.. But if you are saying there super hard to maneuver, why do people ride them?

I'm a REAL MAN. I broke my spine in two places on a Honda Rebel.

Now THAT'S manliness! Years of intense pain, with absolutely NO cred!

It took more sheer balls for me to get out of bed some days than it takes to do the Sturgis trip.

Last time I got flipped off by a Harley was rider was out in the Texas Hill Country. There were a pack of Harley riders doing 45 in a 60 zone. I passed fully in the left lane and waved as I went by. They all gave me the finger. Sorry, but I don't have time to slow down and wait behind your group of 20, doing 15 under the limit, taking up a half mile of road, with the riders in back than can barely keep the motorcycle up in a corner. Learn to ride your damn status symbol.

It's not that they are super hard, it just takes a certain amount of skill at SLOW speeds. That is what separates the men from the boys in motorcycle riding. Slow speed maneuvering. Gold Wings are not far from sport bikes with bags really, but they are super heavy and not for the novice rider.

It would be like getting your first boat that's a 65' yacht instead of learning on a much easier/smaller one. You could probably sail it, but I don't want to be the guy near your slip.

For me it's a tool to get me to and from work efficiently and fast, and fun on weekends and after work.

I dont stick my nose up to people who play squires. And last I heard FENDER wasnt considered a way of life

sure, you are right. The respect among bikers was originally something made up. So it was with every other clique that members give respect to others in.
On here, do you NOT respect other bassists? Especially the good ones?
There is no doubt that the older group of bikers feel they have earned respect. The old school way of "earning your wheels" was that you had to hand build the bike you rode. Some of us happened to have a talent for that, and therefore ascended to a little higher position on the social ladder for this sub culture. It is really not all that different then here. Someone who buys a cheap bass, and talks smack gets little respect. A luthier gets more respect. Then there is the majority in between, who develop their own skill level, and earn the respect of their peers, based on skill, and effort applied.

The fact that YOU, personally, do not understand how a motorcycle can be more than a tool, does not mean anything more than that you have an opinion, and you choose to be closed minded to the interests of others. I see your dismissal of the opinions and interests of others to be exceedingly self centered, but as with your statements, I have a right to my opinion. That does not make it right, it just makes it valid for me, because it is mine.

The thing I do get, Lee, is that there are some serious MF'ers about their way of life pertaining to their bikes and their clubs. I get that. Like, I know I'm not going to hang out with some Pagan's on next weekends ride.

What I don't get is the accountant/lawyer/Dr/weekend warrior that has the attitude on the road because he can now pretend to be in that crowd.

I once heard that Harley Davidson doesn't make motorcycles, they make an image.

I quit buying HD motorcloths when HD came out with the sales pitch "The bike is optional. "

I do not ride for the image. I started riding, because I loved bikes. When I was 15, I traded work for a honda CB 550, which I had to keep at a friend's house, because I was not supposed to have a bike. By the time I was 18, I had traded up to triumphs, and when I was 20, I bought a 1950 Harley EL. I have owned hondas, kawis and yamas since then, but I still like harley. Now that polaris has bought out Indian, and are supposed to release a new Indian, with the Victory engine, I am thinking of stepping away from harley, for my primary rider again

Check it out--my highschool & riding buddy Joe built this on a tv show & won the contest where you have 15 days to build a chopper & best one takes it home.
No one gives him crap I think it's because he did a lot of the metal work it with his hands.
http://www.bigironart.com/mpc/docs/images/buildorbust/
It looks even better now. He added gun parts for details to stick with the Western theme.
Nicest guy in the world. His dad is a pastor in OC & his wife owns Perfect Circle Cupcakery in the Orange Circle. She too won a tv show contest. I guess you could say they're blessed.

So......... all it takes to get "Biker Respect" is to be able to bolt together a bike???????

like these clowns?

Personally, I think that all of the TV Show "Bikers" have done more to hurt the Mystique and cred of badazz bikers.
now, the "Pirate on a Chopper" is a caricature and cliche.

sons of anarchy anybody ???????

I have always thought that the Indian motorcycles were one of the coolest cruisers ever made and Victory makes a great bike/engine. I hope they do make another comeback and get it right this time and keep that brand alive for many years to come.
