I'm just curious :

why does everyone call a Bass guitar "she" or "her" ?

to me a Bass guitar has nothing of a gracious female or sth. like that....

I've always called a bass a "he"". IMO "She" or "her" work well for guitars, but not for basses (unless you fancy bulky dames with guttural voices, hehe).

Respectfully disagree
My basses are all slim, curvaceous, sexy females (well, except for "Kyle's mom", she's a big fat b***h)
Key point...Curves.
I rest my case

Because a bass is the opposite of all that your girlfriend or wife gets upset about.
Basses don't mind if you have another bass in the house.
Basses don't mind if you check out others basses when you go out.
Basses don't get mad when you handle your friend's bass.
Your bass never argues with you.
Your bass doesn't get angry when you bring another bass home.
Basses don't get mad about you staying out till 1:00AM playing with other basses.

I could keep going...I've got pages of these.

English is one of the languages that doesn't use gender in it's grammar. This is how we compensate.

For example, French. The word for "the" is le or la depending on the gender of the subject word after it. The boy - le garcon; the girl - la fille.

Basses have curves like a woman so many subconsciously assign female gender. Ymmv.

Mine are mostly men I gotta say...I've got a couple of "girls" (i.e. - high voice, not much balls to them...) but generally bass-wise give me a bloke over a bird any day of the week!

Although I don't call anything I own a she/he, if I started I it certainly wouldn't be "he". Something about it just makes it sound...off.

that's a good point because here in germany the difference is :

both are called the Bass and the Guitar but - the "the" before the guitar is describing the guitar as a "she" while the "the" before the Bass describes it as a "he"

To me the best example is BB King's Lucille - what a great name for a guitar.... but would you name your Bass like that ?? Me not

This is all just perspective.. I would much rather caress a girl, but that's just me. YMMV, etc

I don't caress my basses too much...I don't like them to get injured granted, but I play them live so they're GONNA get the odd dint (besides - they CAN "slap" you back with a broken string across the face, which women generally dont I dont think...)

Yeah - thats where I'm coming from! (Unless you like the wierdo's like Piccolo basses or Baritone guitars, but thats a different topic...)

Try telling a woman she's a bulky dame with a gutteral voice, and see what happens...

...Unless your into that sort of thing. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

why is a Bass called "She" ?

IMO, it's just a term of affection, and are called that for the same reason pilots refer to their plane as 'she' and sailors refer to their ship as 'she'.

Yeah, real women know how to slap back also. Playing live doesn't change that, my girls (even the 'actual' girl) love to perform, and giving them the grace and respect they deserve adds to the fun. But get them mad, and boy you got trouble

Cos you run your hand up and down her neck, and dig in hard with your other hand because you like the tone you can get out of her.

Oh yeah, she also ends up with some severe buckle rash and look a bit road worn after 40 years.

My basses are not feminine ...

Guitars are feminine ... they play pretty melodies and chords ...

But basses play low notes that border on subsonic. They rattle the whole building. They grind and growl. They use big fat strings. I keep my basses in the basement so the women and children in the house will be safe.

My basses are not girly in any way.
