Why do people drink light beer?

I guess Coors light and Amstel light are ok. But Bud light? Miller light? For that I just drink water. I makes me laugh when I see people getting thrashed from light beers.

There is still alcohol in it... Different strokes for different folks, man. I can appreciate a good brew, or I can go cheap and drink Miller Light, it just depends on the wallet, and my mood.

I've always wondered why American culture wants flavor to the point that the food is pretty unhealthy, then drink water beer. I also will drink water before most American domestics.

I drink Coors light when I weed my garden or do anything with power tools. Especially on a hot day. It's a nice substitute for water.

Bud Light is 4.2% alchohol, it takes a few more but it does the job. I prefer Becks or Guinness myself.

Miller Lite and Bud Lite have way less gag reflex inducing aftertaste (not my description.... a chick I know). But really... Coors? C'mon, man.

I don't like any Light beers.... can't find a dark beer in a lite version.

Light beer makes a good "party beer". You can get a lot of beer for not a lot of cash. If your goal is to get blitzed then down the first three or four real fast (have you ever tried to down three Guinesses really fast?) and then you won't taste what you're drinking for the rest of the evening anyway.

There's "sipping beer" and there's "party beer".

good point--thats what I was going to say. I am not a big light beer drinker, but when I go to a party where I want to visit with people I like light beer because then I don't get drunk. I usually have a hurting stomach from the carbonation before I feel anything. If I am with some friends and we want to get hammered, we will buy non-light beer.

When I was brewing my own beer, I read that lightly flavored and lightly colored lagers came into vogue during and around Prohibition and the Great Depression. More and more women were now drinking beer, and they generally preferred a lighter brew. Personally, I like stout and brown ale.

newcastle brown ale is probabaly my favorite beer, but light beer has its place as well...definitely party beer. in my college prime i would regularly eclipse the 20 beer mark on a given thursday, friday or saturday ngiht of drinking(and the occasional mon, tues, wed or sunday) but i dont think i could do that amount fo drinking if i substituted the keystone light, bud light, coors light or whatever with newcastle or something equally heavy and dark.

I thought all American beer was "light beer". Light on flavour, that is.

You can bash Bud Light all ya want, but we have some strong stuff out there! We're not all tasteless, just most of the general population.

I like both.

If you're asking why light beer is so popular, I can answer that question with a little Saint Louis history. Saint Louis has a long tradition of brewing thanks to the influx of german immigrants who favored a lager beer. These breweries (Such as Lemp and Anheuser busch) grew in popularly and size along with smaller breweries in the area until prohibition hit. These larger breweries were able to survive by selling malts, beer yeast, hops and other such things until after "The great experiment failed". Afterwords, they resumed beer production and have been an American icon since.

I think people get drunk on so-called "light beer" faster. There's not much in it to digest, so the alcohol goes into the blood stream a lot more rapidly. Since it's less filling, people also seem to drink it a lot faster too.

I call it beer flavored alcohol water...Although there are many, many, American microbreweries these days that don't follow that trend, but they probably don't export.
