Why do you live in the cold?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been living in chicago for 3 years. It is a great city and I have been dealing ok with the winters. The summers have been great.

Today was -20F. Horrible day. I don't have to shovel snow but still c'mon, it is getting as cold as the north pole. I am about to call it quits.

Maybe move to AZ or California.

Why do people like it here? Why do you live in a cold city?

I live in Canada because I was born here. I continue to live in Toronto because I attend school here. Once my career is in full swing, however, you can bet I'm looking at moving. I want to spend a few years in Japan, Netherlands, and beyond that, who knows?

Your question reminds me: Every winter (to this day) I ask my parents: "Mom's Dutch! Why the crap didn't you two settle there instead of this climactic yo-yo?"

It's too damn cold for about 6 weeks during the winter and too damn hot for about 6 weeks during the summer. The other 40 weeks of the year are just about right.

Quit yer whining ya sissy bedwetter!

Pretty much says it. You have to put up with the crap to have the good. I don't worry about getting shot, my kid can play outside, the air is (mostly) clean, we have lots of recreational options, and generally people are nice.

The extreme cold tends to keep the "less desirable" people away.

I have been wondering a bit this week though as it hasn't been above zero for days.

I'm usually pretty stoic, but I don't know about this week.

I know all about cold. I grew up in Montreal, lived in the high arctic (Resolute Bay, Hall Beach, NWT) and Calgary. After living in the Persian Gulf for three years and enjoying palm trees and beaches, I realized winter cold is not for me. we're having our worst winter in Switzerland in seven years and it has not dropped below -5C or roughly 20-25F.

Not interested in cold weather anymore. Been there. Done that.

i can deal with weather above 20F. But when it starts going lower to 10F, to 0 and negative. I start cursing everything.
Is it the global warming? That's why is so @# cold?

In my first summer here I went to the lake, there was a side where they have a track for bikes, so it's only pavement, then the lake. I saw someone laying down on a towel on the pavement. I thought that was the funniest and ridiculous thing.

Now I think I am going to be one of those people.

So true...so true. Don't forget the Texans, as well.

For me, I live in a (semi) cold city because I enjoy winter weather. I love the snow. I like to drive in the snow. I love walking in the snow. I love hunting in the snow. I even like camping in the snow. I still kick myself for not taking advantage of the opportunity I had, many years ago, to work for a season in Antarctica. Colorado is nice because we get all 4 seasons. This helps to appreciate each one even more.

I don't.

Personally I like living where it's warm but still within a two hour drive of the snow AND the beach. Not to mention a much shorter drive to wine country.

But honestly, outside of family and work are there many other reasons why people live where they do?

Because if I get frostbite here, the state pays for the treatment.

I'm in NY, currently looking for subzero tonight. I live here (aside from being from here) for the cycle of seasons. I've tried to be in single season situations and it just doesn't work for me. I like the metaphor of the changes, In that it won't be winter forever. and the sense of humor that states "don't like the weather? Wait an hour." Nothing like Times Square on a cold windy day, with the gale howling down 48th or that same day on the barrier beaches that are warm and welcome in the summer. This is getting me in deep so I'm done now,That's why, the end.
