Why is my Car Dumping Coolant?

Sign in to disble this ad
My car keeps dumping coolant, it isn't a leak, my mechanic even checked. It just makes this odd noise and dumps it all every now and then. What's up with that?

It HAS to be a leak. Where is it dumping it from?

Take it to a dealer. They will charge you 85.00 to "inspect it". Then more than likely, you will have an estimate that you could put your kids through college with.

Seriously, go to any reputable radiator repair service. You will have multiple options ( less expensive) if you need a new radiator.

Your head gasket is blown, possibly a cracked block. Been there, done that.

Could be a few things but more than likely it's the head gasket or the head. Your engine is probably burning it. Do you blow white smoke? What kind of car and how many miles?

If coolant is disappearing and there's no sign of a leak, it's probably a blown head gasket and/or cracked block.

How can a coolant system that constantly "dumps" it's coolant NOT have a leak? You need a new mechanic.

Or, does it have a "sweet" smell at the exhaust. He could also start it up cool with the radiator cap off and slightly rev it up to see if any foam or bubbles are in the coolant once the car warms a bit.

What kind of mechanic checks for coolant leaks, can't find one and doesn't do a compression test?

Its a 99 Ford Taurus, about 80k miles. It makes a whirring/overworked sound and dumps it, I think it only happens when it is in park. Otherwise it doesn't leak. No smoke or anything. The mechanic just gave it a quick look when I mentioned it before he replaced the steering rack.

My great uncle said maybe a stuck thermostat?

Could be. Certainly would make sense as when it opens suddenly, the pressure of the coolant hitting your engine heads and water pump would slow the engine slightly and hence your description of whining/overworked.

How's the temp gauge reading? Stuck thermostat would likely involve a higher than normal reading followed by a giant drop when it finally opens.

Gauge reads normal until it dumps it, then it creeps up

Step 1 - Go to a radiator shop
Step 2 - Fix the leak
Step 3 - Sell the car
Step 4 - Buy a Honda, Toyota or Nissan

It would be reading air temp. It would not be high. When the coolant comes in, it would be already pre heated and would not have a huge difference in temp.

Get this car to a repair shop before you crack the block/head.

one thing to mention, radiator reservoirs has expansion tube to dumb excess coolant and it seems to happen more during hot whether, coolant expands then seeps out, it could be as simple as that!!

Not my experience. Engine gets hot without coolant running. Engine cools when coolant flows.

Definitely agree OP should check it out before cracking a block though.
