Why is it so Hard to Tie a Tie?!?!

Sign in to disble this ad
So I had to wear a tie last night, and I was ready a half hour before necessary, but I had also spent an hour trying to a tie a tie.
Who came up with this idea? What genius decided to come up with a piece of clothing so difficult to put on?
Maybe it's just me, but if you don't do it just right, it won't be the proper length or anything...

Is it just me, or are ties hard to tie?!

Sorry, just had to vent a bit.

Ties are extremely easy to tie. The next time you get stuck, just youtube it, there are a bunch of videos showing how to do it, with a bunch of different knots. The half windsor and the double windsor are really easy to tie, learn those.

Perhaps a clip-on tie would be best for you.

I do it every morning on the way to work, takes less than a minute and I don't even look at what I'm doing until I'm finished.
So no, not really difficult to do.

It was quite tempting, I wont lie

I used the YouTube videos, which had succeeded last time, but I couldn't get it right this time.

Oh well, I'll figure it out eventually. Just had to rant a bit.

Being English, I had to wear a tie as part of my school uniform, so I had to tie a tie 5 days a week for 7 years. I'm not sure I'll ever forget how to do it.

Right, get a clip-on or learn. I prefer a double windsor knot because it is even on both sides of the knot (v shaped). A half-windsor always looks unbalanced to me (take a "v" and push one side inwards halfway or so and you'll know what I mean).

I rarely have to wear a tie but what I did was to get it right once and then just loosen it enough to slip it over my head. When I need to wear it again, I just slip it back over my head and tighten it. Primitive, I know, but it works for me.

I do that sometimes to save time, and I've been wearing ties as needed for 50 years.

Try a zipper tie! I bought one for my father-in-law last month - he has dementia, and he can't tie a tie - and it works great! You can get them at WalMart for about $10.00.

It's always good to know how to tie a tie, but it's always going to be a PITA.

Don't get a clip on, the knot never looks as good as a hand tied knot.

Well, which knot are you trying to tie? Half Windsor? Full Windsor? Try the Four-in-hand knot which is very easy to tie... this is the most common and I can do it without a mirror in under a minute at the perfect length every time.

I've been wearing ties since I was seven, so at this point in my life, I can tie a tie in my sleep. I'm sure I struggled with learning it though when I was younger.

I know many people who do this, and past ties I almost always leave tied. It works nicely, but I often have to buy new ties for different events.

I tried all 3 of those, using videos and step by step directions. I just couldn't get it down.

Five minutes should be a long time to tie a tie. I don't know what you were doing for an hour, but I'm sure it wasn't tying a tie.

Problem is, it ruins the tie when you open the knot to tie another kind

I had this same problem a few months ago. I had to go to a wedding and it was the first formal affair I've been to in years. Last time I had to wear a tie, I just asked my dad to do it for me. So I figured, "Hey, you know who can help me? THE INTERNET!!"
If you look for it on Google or even YouTube, there are TONS of instructional videos that show you how to do it step-by-step, and there are hundreds of different styles and different knots you can try. It worked for me and after about 20 minutes of practice, I can do it nice and quick every time now.

The thing that I don't understand is why are there so many different kinds of knots (literally dozens), when the end result looks EXACTLY the same 95% of the time?

It becomes quite easy once you've done it a bunch of times. The length thing should just be trial and error. Use your shirt buttons as a gauge of where the skinny end should reach.
