Sign in to disble this ad
So I had to wear a tie last night, and I was ready a half hour before necessary, but I had also spent an hour trying to a tie a tie.
Who came up with this idea? What genius decided to come up with a piece of clothing so difficult to put on?
Maybe it's just me, but if you don't do it just right, it won't be the proper length or anything...
Is it just me, or are ties hard to tie?!
Sorry, just had to vent a bit.

The next time you get stuck, just youtube it, there are a bunch of videos showing how to do it, with a bunch of different knots. The half windsor and the double windsor are really easy to tie, learn those.

So no, not really difficult to do. |

I used the YouTube videos, which had succeeded last time, but I couldn't get it right this time.
Oh well, I'll figure it out eventually. Just had to rant a bit.

A half-windsor always looks unbalanced to me (take a "v" and push one side inwards halfway or so and you'll know what I mean).

When I need to wear it again, I just slip it back over my head and tighten it. Primitive, I know, but it works for me.

I bought one for my father-in-law last month - he has dementia, and he can't tie a tie - and it works great! You can get them at WalMart for about $10.00. http://www.thesilktiefactory.com/zipperties9.html
It's always good to know how to tie a tie, but it's always going to be a PITA.

Try the Four-in-hand knot which is very easy to tie... this is the most common and I can do it without a mirror in under a minute at the perfect length every time. http://www.brooksbrothers.com/TieKnots/4inhand.tem

I just couldn't get it down.

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Long Island, NY | | | I had this same problem a few months ago. I had to go to a wedding and it was the first formal affair I've been to in years. Last time I had to wear a tie, I just asked my dad to do it for me. So I figured, "Hey, you know who can help me? THE INTERNET!!"
If you look for it on Google or even YouTube, there are TONS of instructional videos that show you how to do it step-by-step, and there are hundreds of different styles and different knots you can try. It worked for me and after about 20 minutes of practice, I can do it nice and quick every time now.
The thing that I don't understand is why are there so many different kinds of knots (literally dozens), when the end result looks EXACTLY the same 95% of the time?

The length thing should just be trial and error. Use your shirt buttons as a gauge of where the skinny end should reach. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
