Why so many sperm?

Sign in to disble this ad
Some people believe that individuals are meant to to be here and that there is a reason that they exist - a unique cosmic plan for each person.

If this is so, than why does a male release anywhere between 40 million to over a billion sperm cells during intercourse?

If an individual was cosmically predetermined, wouldn't there only need to be one sperm cell?

What do you think?

You're thinking with the wrong head on this one.

If there were only one, it wouldn't be as fun.

You're setting up a false dichotomy.

If predestination exists, then you have to buy the fact that the particular sperm that got through to the egg was the one that was supposed to.

Nowhere in that argument does the number of sperm factor in.

You'd have to call it the money drop.

Because you're talking at least 40,000,000:1 odds that we'd be here to start with?

Maybe this is why dudes named Joe-Bob-Jim win the lottery.

It's easy. One sperm fertilizes the egg. Another buys the egg diner, while another one tells her that she's beautiful, another tells her that he loves her, another tells her that she does not look fat in that membrane, and on and on. Once all 40 million aspects of a woman's bizarre personality are covered, the one lucky sperm get's his treat.

I dont believe that the course of our lives is predetermined. However, to answer to the fail in your logic I'll posit that perhaps that one sperm in 1 billion was predetermined to reach its destination. Fairly simple stuff, really.

Because they come from men who, for some reason, don't like to stop and ask for directions and they get lost on their way to the prize.

Yep. Every time you feel like a loser, remember that you were once chosen amongst 40 million others.

Joking aside - there are good biological reasons why one sex cell (sperm) is pretty much the smallest cell in the body and produced in huge numbers, and the other sex cell (ovum) is by far the largest. That's the essence of the difference between male and female organisms of all sorts and the explanation for why things are that way is really interesting.

But it's pretty complex and certainly not something that can be easily explained in an OT post! I can recommend some technical reading if you're interested?

Great jokes (I'd come up with the asking for directions one myself).

Short answer: the more sperm are released, the better odds of one fertilizing the egg. Evolutionally speaking, this is highly favorable over only one sperm being released.

As for cosmic predetermination, stars don't factor in to conception too much (though I'm confidant we'll get a few jokes on the topic). Also, you've noted the silliness of the notion yourself by asking the question.

Just because one CAN get the job done, doesn't mean it will.

Think of it like the acorn. Thousands can fall from one tree. Often, not even one makes another tree. Most get eaten by squirrels. Some get their caps removed and turned into whistles.

The moral? watch your nuts.

3) Therefore, there should be over 40 million sperm cells, each containing genetic information for a unique human being that will all die.

Sure, you could say that God created a vast over-abundance of sperm cells with only a single one chosen long before all of the others ever even existed. But does that really make sense?

Evolution actually predicts that the most likely organisms to survive create surpluses.

Sorry, but I don't agree that both ways of looking at it have equal validity.
Firstly, you're falling back into the same fallacy from your first post, possibly because you're not actually paying attention.

Secondly, you're asking for predestination/determinism to make sense. There are a whole bunch of problems with that statement, but I don't feel like going into them if I don't have to.

I will say that your 1,2,3 statement makes perfect sense, when placed in a the context of predestination. The same way some people get cancer/are hit by cars/die in childbirth, etc.

Comparing the philosophy of predestination to the theory of evolution is comparing apples to chainsaws.

This should help you. I'd also recommend the wikipedia article on sperm. Also a good 8th grade health book.

Congratulations - you have somehow successfully managed to miss the point of everything I've said. That takes skill.

This has nothing to do with anything I've asked.

Ok....

It was my fault for posing this question here. I'm heading it over to the philosophy forums.

Give your brains a rest - don't worry about it.
