Here's the deal. My wife makes pretty good money as a nurse, and I've handed over the reigns of "bacon bringer homer" to her. I'd still like to work, just to get out of the house once in a while. I've been applying at GC for the last 2 years straight, every couple months, and following up with phone calls. Every time I get the same BS, "We'll let you know when we're hiring." Yet every time I walk into that damn store, there's at least one new face, and they typically don't know their elbow from an Ebow.
Some of the women they've had behind the accessories counter couldn't tell the difference between bass and guitar strings.
I know what you're thinking... Why is he so hell bent on working there!? Well, I've always wanted to, ever since my first music shop visit, I've wanted to be that dork behind the counter. Call it a morbid fantasy if you will. I'd also like to get paid in gear!
Ugh.

It probably won't get you a job but it should provide some measure of satisfaction. And it will get you out of the house. |

Not sure which one you're applying at, but there's several in our area that you could hit. There's also the smaller guys in Orland Park like Music Go Round (you'd get to see all the cool used gear first), House of Music (although they're more lesson centered), Midlothian Music...and those are just the ones off the top of my head. Oh, and there's another guitar shop in Frankfort...forget their name...I could find it if you want though...
Just suggestions based on the chi/nwi location, so please forgive me if they don't apply. |

Just suggestions based on the chi/nwi location, so please forgive me if they don't apply. | OP is my my home town actually. Unfortunately, I'm about 55 miles east of it, and to drive that far for work is just futile. I would work at any music shop that would take me, but I would honestly prefer to work in a shop that sells real gear, which as you know, is rare for a mom-n-pop shop. Ironically, the 4 months of lessons I took back in 1990 were at Midlothian Music, in the dead Mall at Orland.
To be bluntly honest, I was hoping I would run into a corporate GC employee that would be willing to pull a string or two to help me get in lol. I have enough managerial and sales experience to run a GC, and run it well. |

| | | | 1. you know what you're talking about, which would threaten the manager.
2. Your're either not hipster or rocker enough looking.
3. You're not the piece of ass they want to cheat on their wife with.
4. Dude it's ^#$%^&%$ retail.
The ones by my house seem pretty fair in their hiring actually and actually have some competent staff.
Have tried after you fill out an app to go into the bass section and play schism or some generic fast slap licks? I'd figure that alone would make you head of the bass section. |

They hired folks with little to no musical experience, but worked at Best Buy and places like that. It showed when I asked questions and they just read the hang tag. |

1. You want to work there
2. You would have to fit in
3. You know 'how' to demonstrate/play bass
Maybe they don't think you'll fit in, somehow. As much as we'd all like to mold into any situation that we want, you may not fit that store's idea of a new GC employee.
