I recently moved into a large apartment complex and have made a few new friends. We talk almost daily (we are all retired) and today one of these friends went off on a discussion as how he waits all day, just to go to sleep. It's his favorite time of the day. And he was also talking a bit about suicide and Alzheimer patients just merely existing, not living.
When I came into my apartment I told my wife how much I loved her.
It saddened me.

I've also lost a brother at a young age ( 6 months before his 21st birthday ) and a newborn daughter. When my daughter passed I made a vow to see the world through her eyes. To see it as new, not with my jaded view. To find the wonder in it all. I took it to heart and it's stayed with me now for 10 years last April. I'm glad to be alive, and experience the world through a child's eyes. |

| | That's the way uh huh uh huh I like it.. | | Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Robbinsville, NJ | | | Well, I think I like being alive because I sorta faced death a few years back via open heart surgery. I realize that sounds overly-dramatic as every year thousands of folks get the same surgery and most are fine, but still...
I figured I would survive, but I was thoroughly warned that there was a very real chance of death. I never had to face my own mortality before, it was kinda surreal... making a will, writing "final letters" to my kids, very bizarre.
After the surgery, when I woke up, things were different. I kind of did not fear death so much and I really really appreciate the "small things" in life now, so, I dunno.. living's cool to me. It 'aint perfect, but it's cool.
FG - great post, thanks for sharing dude!

For me, my kids and dogs. They keep me going and give me purpose. But if something happened to them, I'd find another reason.

I have long talks with my 80 year old mother, I interact and teach my 3 kids, I talk to my wife a hundred times a day and I still enjoy seeing a hawk on a sunny day! I like watching the birds eat from our bird feeder and seeing the flowers bloom. The only thing I don't care for is some of my interactions with other people, but there is just so much to appriciate on this big blue ball we live on.

I was going to say that it beats the alternative, but I have zero experience with the alternative so I can't really say that with any sort of confidence.
All good things in all good time I guess.
