Widescreen and Computers Philosophy

Philosophy... it's a matter of opinion more than a theory but still!

With the new taskbar in Windows 7, Mac OS' Dock and Widescreen monitors, I've come to believe that the taskbar should be on either side instead of the bottom. What do you think?

My points are that, back then, with Windows 95/98 and XP it was only right to put it at the bottom because monitors weren't built wider and the when you minimized it was in the form of text instead of icons. But now that it's not text anymore and we have widescreen monitors why should it be at the bottom other than the fact that it has always been there?

Why not use the extra space for the taskbar?

The most used applications are vertically designed too! Browsers, Word, Excel... So instead of using unnecessary space on the sides, and having to scroll more often, why not put it on the side?

hmm... maybe I should go back to my homework!

For those who don't know, it looks like this:

I never liked autohide on Windows... it feels buggy. I don't mind the dock's autohide though.

I've used it since win2k... I make my taskbar double high and autohide it.

Here is my new Win7 desktop with my taskbar exposed

I agree...I've run my toolbars in Microsoft Word apps on the side, and do the same for my desktop taskbar.

I couldn't help but think of this article (remotely related):

I've seen people do it, it's just strange to me. I've been using Auto-Hide since Win 95.

Even using it on my Macbook Pro.

I was using MacOS Classic (7.1 thru 9.2) prior to getting my first office supplied windows laptop in 2000... but seeing it on win98 was what made me try it on win2k.

nope... not for me. I played with it on the right and left auto-hide and not for a while, I like it at the bottom.

If you are concerned with screen height, you could always spin it 90 degrees. A few of the code guys at the office do that with their second monitor.

I've been moving my taskbar to the left-hand side for about eight years now... it's completely configurable.

I like it on the left, at the bottom.

With auto-hide, since I work with Adobe toolbars on both sides.

I'm on a 15.4" widescreen laptop, and I feel like I have all the real estate I need. I'd still love a second monitor, though

I'll probably be dual booting my MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard and Windows 7 as well.

I've been using windows since 2.0. Never upgrade until the first service pack is out. Let other people do the testing.
