Window Media Player Affecting CPU?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just noticed this in the past couple of months with my computer. It seems that WMP is affecting my CPU performance. Everything runs really slow when I play music files. When I open Windows Task Manager, it shows that WMP is sometimes using 50% of CPU memory. Should I obtain a different media player, or is there something wrong with my computer? Really strange as it never did this in the past. Thanks techies!

You need a new media player.

Winamp is a good alternative.

+1 for Winamp

Definitely my #1 media player. Highly customizable, plus it's pretty easy to use. Also comes with Shoutcast Radio, which is better than most any radio out in this part of Texas.

also, Winamp has like a thousand plugins you can install for different formats, and has many more awesome skins than WMP.

Also look into VideoLan, http://www.videolan.org/. It plays music and videos in any format.

You should also clean your registry and run some anti-malware/spyware/virus software.

Thanks for the suggestion; I run CCleaner, Spybot, Auslogics Disk Defrag, and AVG antivirus weekly.

Also, I completely uninstalled Windows Office and I run Open Office, I saw an immediate improvement in my processing power. It took awhile to convert, though.

I used to run OpenOffice too until I got the MSOffice 2010 beta. Office 2010 totally KILLS!

I use Microsoft Office for Mac, so my PC doesn't get bothered

The only problem with that is it isnt quite 100% compat. with the real deal office.

And when you have to give presentations on a computer that uses Office, everything goes a bit off!

I believe there's an updated version of that coming but maybe not until 2011.

Yeah, thanks to the Free Software thread at the top of OT, I'm now a proud user of Winamp, Open Office, Clean up!, and FreeRam XP Pro.

My computer has never been cleaner or faster, and Winamp is still awesome.
