Window Too Wide For Air Contitioner

Sign in to disble this ad
Now to say I'm not handy around the house is an understatement.

Anyway, I need to pick up a new air conditioner and the window kits for the ones I'm looking at accordian out to about 36" and my window is 45" wide. I'm having difficulty finding a replacement window kit and I'm stuck.

Any suggestions? I thought about cardboard but that's kind of ugly.

Thanks.

Sorry, I am not the most handy either, but is there any way to get a piece of wood cut to fit the hole? Surely it would look better than cardboard and you could put that self-adhesive weather stripping around edge to make it somewhat airtight. I am guessing here.

edit, what brand is the unit? Maybe they sell an adapter kit or at least show one on theior website?

Buy a piece of plywood & cut a hole in it. Caulk it well.

Are you talking the type that vent out through a round hose, or simply the airconditioners that have the "ears" top to bottom that are supposed to 'accordion" out to the edges of the window? I suspect you are meaning the latter, to which I say don't use the frame-in at all, have the AC favor one side of the openning, anchor it to the windowpane with the screw holes, then affix a piece of play to cover the remaining gap. I would affix that in some manner to the window too, and then place a brace at the top of the windowpane to keep it from lifting, and to keep intruders out.
