Windows 7 won't stay awake for me

Alright, I've been having a problem win Win7 and it's starting to get annoying. No matter what I do, it always goes to sleep on me within a half hour or so. Like last night, I set Steam to download a few games overnight, and I wake up just now and my PC is fast asleep , and how I'm going to be waiting all morning for my games to finish.

In the control panel I have it set to never sleep. I've even gone so far as to disable any power savings options to be safe, but I still can't get my machine to stay awake. Anyone else have this problem or have any ideas?

If you put it into "presentation mode", it should never sleep, go to standby or enable screensaver.

On my laptop, I use that, combined with "switch off screen after 1 minute". Mind, this is in XP/Vista.

For some stupid reason, the Windows 7 default setup is to go to sleep after 1/2 hour of idle time.

Just go into Control Panel -> Power Options and change the time before it goes to sleep from 1/2 hour to whatever you want (in my case, "never").

Thanks, I just noticed and hopefully fixed that a little while ago. Why does it have a setting for that hidden in the advanced menu that apparently overrides the sleep timer on the main panel of the power savings menu?

A side note - how do you like 7? I'm thinking about buying it for my laptop that is currently running vista...

I'm really liking it so far. Seeing as this was the most major issue I was having, I think that says a bit about how decent this version is :P

I have a Vista on my laptop as well, and I'm liking 7 better than it. It's what Vista should have been in the first place; more polished and smoother running. My friend actually got 7 running on an ancient Dell laptop and it works alright. By ancient I mean about 512 megs of RAM and an old stripped down processor. I remember Vista being almost unusable with a gig and anything less than the top tier processors at first (it's better now).

In short, this is a version of Windows that even a Linux fanboy like me is willing to pay for.
