Windows Vista Patches and Updates?

Sign in to disble this ad
A friend of mine installed vista for me, but when i open my control panel to download the updates and patches and such, the window that im in just freezes up. I tried a few different things and still no good.

Anyway i can just download the patches and stuff offline? I can go to microsoft.com and look for their updates and stuff, but i dont know what updates i really need! I know that my computer is running a littly choppy, as it was not before.

I just assume that this is an old version of vista ultimate and is a little choppy because there are NO updates installed on it.

Help Please!?

ahh Vista. Big no-no. Its just not worth getting vista. Instead of trying the Patches and updates, go back to XP sp2.

But if you want to keep vista, im pretty sure under control panel there will be some kind of Windows update.
In XP you press start all programs and right at the top will be Windows Update.

Vista needs memory. I went from 512 to 1.5g and that made a huge difference.

Sorry you're having problems. My Vista machine has been flawless from day 1. Good luck, keep checking microsoft's website.

Windows Vista SP1: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
All other manual downloads: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/r...DisplayLang=en

However before updating to sp1, try using this update here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

It looks like what you need: Here is description:

"Update for Windows Vista (KB937287)
Brief Description
Install this update to enable future updates to install successfully on all editions of Windows Vista."

If that does not work, it seems there is a bigger issue, and you don't want to go on if system is not doing it's job right, update should not freeze even on home edition. Did you install vista over old XP version? If so was the XP performing ok? So download patch "KB937287" and try doing windows update to see if it freezes, if it does, let me know, i'll take a further look. I remember there was some fix for that besides installing windose over.

Sounds like if its that bad, it might be your hardware that is a problem. Check your memory for errors via memtest86. What memory are you running?

Download Hirens 9.2 and check your hardware.

my system: Core 2 duo 2.13 OCed to run at 2.5ghz (standard CPU Fan, ph34r!) Asus p5n32-e SLI, 2gb of Kingston HyperX PC2 6400 (1gbx2 but soon tobe 1gbx4) BFG 8800GTS 512. 650watt antec, 2 system fans and 2 core fans. Vista is not having problems with that system at all, so it sounds like you either have a hardware that is causing a problem, a bad combination of hardware or worse, something cheap like Patriot memory or ECS motherboard.

Maybe your updater will run properly after SP1 is installed. Have you been messing with your registry or running programs that have? Are you keeping up with spyware scans and whatnot?

I have had zero probs with Vista Ultimate 64bit. Not one problem.
