Paul Santucci, voted most likely to make a new thread devoted to problems with technology, of course I can't fail you Talkbass!

Anyways, my friends computer, Alienware if that makes a difference...He had to reinstall the OS, XP, and now i guess all the drivers are not installed. so no connecting to the internet and such.

How do i reinstall all of this stuff for him? download it on my computer then transfer it to his? Im downloading the 2nd service pack for XP right now. Anything else i need?

Alienware didn't give him any other CDs with drivers on it?

Make sure you get the video card/sound drivers

If you know the make/model of the peripherals, you can get the drivers from their websites.

You are a good friend to try to do all this for him , however I suspect you are in a loose loose situation. Be sure you are not fighting a hardware issue.

did you do a full reinstall of the operating system, with a full harddrive reformat?

also, do you have the proper sata drivers? did he have a raid drive set up?

Do you happen to know what motherboard he has?

I used to have a Nvidia 680i Ultra that had the same problem, it would work for a little bit and the the LAN controller would poop, I'd either get a Bluescreen or it would just forget what it was... I had to RMA it.

Bluescreen occurring so shortly after a clean install is not a good sign, especially with XP.

What was the original reason he had to reinstall the OS?

It was insanely slow, had tons of spyware on it, and would freeze a ton. Anyways, i reinstalled it again, and...again, blue screen after a few hours.

Are you reinstalling the OS over another instance of itself or are you formatting the drive and performing a clean install? If the former, you may want to try the latter. (Back up anything important first, of course.)

Also, make sure you have the correct drivers for the installed hardware. Most drivers are available from the product or chip-maker web sites or from driver-specific sites.

Additionally, set your friend up with these (all free):

Comodo Firewall

Comodo Anti-Malware

SpywareBlaster

avast!

Also blue screen errors can happen like that without the proper drivers on the machine OR a hardware failure.

Get the 0x0000000XX code on the next blue screen and post it. I have feeling it will be a 7F or something similar at the end but I will keep my hunches to myself for now until you confirm.

yeah, the codes for the bsod would be helpful for debugging purporses - might also be hardware issues, which this would illuminate. shoot, your video card might not be seated tightly (had that cause a bsod before).

Go to your nearest hardware store, but a heavy duty sledge hammer (if you don't already own one), drive home, bash that Windoze-based PC into 1 MIL pieces....then buy yourself a Mac.

Coming from a 15 year Windoze user, who switched to Mac last year. NEVER EVER EVER going back. (and yes I am compatible with everything else - network, Office, email, browsing, etc. etc. etc.).
