no, no, I'm not talking about European complaints (just kidding, just kidding, relax) but wine. We always talk beer, tonight, let us talk a little wine. Tonight I had some very nice Gewurtztraminer from Duck Walk Vineyards of Long Island, NY. what's that you say? you didn't know that we Long Islanders made some very fine wines? Now you know. The name of this wine is Aphrodite, I think it is correct

http://drinkingtheworld.com/wp-conte.../04/duck-1.jpg

EDIT:if you guys could post pictures of the bottles, I think that would be beneficial to all of us. while it's good to know the names, I find it much easier to shop when I know what the bottle looks like, especially since a singular name can have multiple varieties or years.

had a bottle of this on Thankstaking, I mean Thanksgiving

yes, it's a wine made in California by former Marines. proceeds go to wives and kids of Marines killed in combat.
I liked it, a bit dry, yet tasty.

I live a short drive from wine country (Sonoma, Napa, Mendecino) which is a beautiful thing.

Tonight I'm enjoying a Tawny Port from Kaz's Vineyard. It's a quirky little vineyard in Kenwood, between Sonoma and Santa Rosa.

Good stuff, though I usually wait until it's a bit colder for port drinking.

I play the winery and tasting room circuit in Washington and Oregon quite a bit. I prefer big reds, which work very well out here.

Last weekend's gig: The Pines Winery. Their old vine Zinfandel comes from a vineyard planted in 1852, and it sells out very quickly every year. Guess what I was hitting on for most of my comp'ed glasses that night?

Thanksgiving weekend, and many, many other gigs: Maryhill Winery. This place has a 4000 seat amphitheater, but my jazz trio just plays at the tasting room above it, overlooking the Columbia Gorge. Their standouts are the '03 Cab, and their stellar Sangiovese (the varietal Chianti is made from in Italy). My wife watched one register ring $7K in sales by the case in less than an hour during the last gig...we need a raise for sure!

I also play at the tiny local wine bar in my hometown once in a while. They have an incredible selection of local wines, specializing in blended reds such as this: Syncline Subduction Red, and they too take good care of musicians playing there.

I love wine. We're fortunate to live an hour and a half from Burgundy and forty five minutes from the Cote Du Rhone. Beaujolais is 30 minutes away, but I'm not a fan of Gamay. Alsace is 3.5 hours. The Italian Piedmont region is an hour and a half.

Switzerland is a wine producer, but most of it's production gets consumed locally. The wines are mediocre.

As soon as a friend of mine gets back to town next year, we're gonna start making our own wine and beer. I'm going to start with fruits wines (Orange mostly), then work on grape wines. I've read into the subject and it's rather fascinating, especially how they used to make sparkling wines in the old days.

On a related note, could anybody recommend me a good Orange wine?

I love Cab's. I've really been digging a lot on South American Cab's lately, they really pack some kick and have an even drier taste.

that's damn awesome! I'm a big fan of reds myself, white wine usually gives me heartburn (maybe I need to up the quality?)

One of our favorite brands is Far Niente. Their Chardonnay is very good, particularly if you can find a pre-2000 vintage.

Their partners also established the Nickel & Nickel winery, and they produce only single vineyard wines. Very tasty. I recommend the Merlot.

There's a wine bar near downtown Tulsa that allows you to sample many different wines, and they have quite a selection. Perfect for finding some hidden gems!

Cool thread. Yes I am a Wine Geek. I prefer more finese styled European wines, red or white, but get a taste for big California or Aussie reds every now and then. I love Italian wine, especially the Sangiovese based wines of Tuscany and Nebbiolo based wines of Piedmont. I also enjoy French wines, esp Burgundy (when I can aford it) and German Reisling. I enjoy red, white, rose, desert wine, port and feel every style has its place.

I probably drink an average of 4-5 bottles per week. I'm all about drinking wine with food and rarely open a bottle without somthing to eat with it. I always drink wine with dinner. I also enjoy cooking and did a stint in Culinary school while apprenticing at a pretty good restaurant but this was over 10 yrs ago and I've since gotten out of it. I've visited many wine producing regions including Italy (2x), France (2x), Greece, as well as Napa and Sonoma.

Much like GAS, I often get aquirement syndrome for wine (is that W.A.S.?) and probably spend way too much on my habit. I have a small cellar, probably between 200-300 bottles at any given time of mostly Italian and French wines.

bmc, I'm quite envious!

I feel there are some very good Beaujolais. try some of the cru wines from Chenas, Moulin a Vent, Fleurie, etc. There was just a good article in our local newspaper regarding this and the bad reputation gamay has received in the past. Check it out:
