Right can someone settle an argument for me that me and my dad are having...

Does everywhere in the world have winter at the same time or does one half of the world have summer and the other winter?

Half and half. It's late summer in the Southern Hemisphere right now.

When people on the northern hemisphere have winter (for example in North America) the people living on the southern hemisphere have summer (for example Australia).
And vice versa.
It's summer in Australia now.

Same goes for autumn and spring, that's also switched half a phase.


Unless you live near the equator, than you really don't have seasons. It's the same weather all year around there. (for example Tenerife.)

Hardly any at all except for high in the mountains.

Around the equator isn't it correct that they got no summer/winter?

The arguement was that we have an elliptical orbit too, so we were arguing when certain parts of the globe are in winter and others in summer.

say for instance, when Italys winter starts for instance in comparison to Australia?

I tried to keep it basic because I was afraid I would get responses like this from people who can't even read:

Apparently explaining the seasons requires you to talk in a strange manner

One way to see it for yourself it to get yourself a globe and a torch/flashlight to represent sunlight. Shine the light from a distance onto the tilted globe and observe how the spot from the light is tightly concentrated in some areas and yet stretched out and weak in others.

You may be surprised by how many adults have misconceptions about the seasons and what causes them. When I was about 14 at school, I remember a teacher (not science) standing in front of the class and telling us all that the seasons are caused by the elliptical orbit of the earth around the sun. Fortunately I knew that couldn't be the whole story; if it were, why would it be summer in Australia when it's Christmas here?

To be honest, I think it's understandable that some people get it wrong. There's quite a lot to the complete picture in a way. The way the earth orbits about the sun, but is tilted about it's axis of rotation and the way that axis is orientated relative to the sun as the earth orbits. The fact that celestial objects follow elliptical orbits; but wouldn't you know it a circle is a type of ellipse. The way the tilt explains 24 hour daylight/darkness in the Arctic/Antarctic circles ... and so on.

I was talking to my GF about the seasons a little while back; she's not dumb by any means, but she had virtually no idea on this particular topic. Everyone is taught how the seasons work at primary school here in the UK. I guess a lot of people just don't make the effort to remember it.

Well this planets axial tilt is between 22.1 and 24.5 degrees apparently, so that would be about right?

It's the same question because there is only one answer which linear provided, all you added to the thread was a misinterpretation of what I stated, at no point did I state that it was "winter all the time". Hence my retort on the fact you can't bloody read... this is getting pathetic now...
