I know this topic has been done a few times, but I am supposed to go for a wisdom teeth removal consultation tomorrow with an oral surgeon. According to my dentist, I only need to have two of them removed; the top teeth are fine, but the bottom teeth are formed sideways. I'll know more when they do a checkup tomorrow.
Did you get your wisdom teeth out with local or general anesthetic? Laughing gas? I'm going to try to ask for local if at all possible, I don't like the idea of general anesthesia, with all the stuff that can go wrong, etc. |

After that you don't feel a thing. Some of my wisdom teeth were impacted, so they had to crack them to get them out. There is no volume control on your cd player or iPod that drowns out that sound. I brought STP - Tiny Music, and the whole procedure for all 4 was about the length of the cd. Maybe a bit longer.

I got a shot in my arm, not sure what it was, but the next thing I knew I was watching TV at home. It was awesome. My face didn't swell at all and there was hardly any pain throughout the whole thing. I've had checkups at the dentist that went a lot worse.

I might have to get one of mine removed, its just coming in, but its coming in squint (nightmare at times when it rubs alot causing the gum to swell). Dentist is going to leave it til its fully in, see if it maybe straightens out. Fingers crossed!
Good luck!

I wouldn't let them do it surgically like all my friends did. The guy just took pliers and rammed his knee on my chest and yanked with all his might, and it felt absolutely awesome to get them out of my mouth. I still have them in a jar. My bottom ones will need the sugery though, they're wrapped around my jaw bone.

| | | Only doing two? Better go ahead and do all four, you don't want to do it twice!
I got dry socket, first case my dentist had in 5 years.......greeeaaat. Let me tell you what, that was the worse pain I've ever experienced. The other three teeth? Minor irritation, bit of soreness, no biggie. Dry socket tooth? Made me want to rip my jaw off!
They did mine with just local (no shot in roof of mouth, all through jaw). Cracking teeth sound, horrible. *shudder*. Took forever for the numbess to set in, was really weird feeling part of my nose fall asleep. Kept drooling too.... dentist warned me not to try to eat anything or talk or I'd bite the heck out of my lips.
I was good, didn't suck on anything or use a straw or get sick and still got dry socket. When I called the dentist, at first they were like, oh, it's normal pain... I went to work and was so miserable they sent me home, I drove straight to dentist. He pokes in there, dry socket! (btw, dry socket is when your jaw bone is exposed to air, no blood clot covering it). All he did was pack this FOUL tasting clove based stuff in there (tasted like chicken poop I think).. I didn't care what it tasted/smelled like cause it stopped the pain in about 10 minutes. Tasted that stuff for a week and probably had dragon breath to boot but didn't care.
Moral of story, listen to dr. about not eating/using straw/whatever, and if it hurts really bad go back quick. Otherwise, the other three teeth? Having my braces readjusted hurt worse than having them pulled . And if I remember right, the dr. had me take ibuprophen before I came in and every few hours to stop from swelling/black eyes. Swelling was only on dry socket side and no black eyes . And keep icing the jaw as long as dr tells you too, it helps. And keep a few good books around, you're not gonna feel like doing much the first day. |

It was easy as hell, I had my surgery early in the morning and was just groggy and numb for the rest of the day, back to normal the next day. It was a 100% painless procedure and recovery for me.

The upside was that I was a trumpet guy at the time, and it pretty much ended that, so I just started gigging heavily as a jazz bassist. Thirty years later, I'm still doing it. So it worked out well.

I think dentists realize that they can make money on this simple procedure and most people will go through with it just because everyone they know has. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
